Remove a Legacy Contact from your Apple Account

A Legacy Contact is someone you choose to have access to the data in your Apple Account after your death. Learn how to remove a Legacy Contact, or what to do if one is unexpectedly removed from your account.

Remove a Legacy Contact

You can remove someone as a Legacy Contact at any time in Apple Account settings on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. You’ll receive an email confirmation when a Legacy Contact is removed from your account.

The person who was previously your Legacy Contact won’t receive a removal notification. You won't appear in their Legacy Contact list, and their access key will no longer work.

You can also add a different Legacy Contact.

On your iPhone or iPad

  1. Go to Settings, then tap your name.

  2. Tap Sign-In & Security, then tap Legacy Contact.

  3. Tap the name of the contact that you want to remove.

  4. Tap Remove Contact and follow the onscreen instructions.

On your Mac

  1. From the Apple menu , choose System Settings, then click your name.

  2. Click Sign-In & Security, then click Legacy Contact.

  3. Choose the name of the contact that you want to remove.

  4. Click Remove Contact and follow the onscreen instructions.

Remove yourself as a Legacy Contact

If someone adds you as a Legacy Contact and you’d prefer not to be, you can talk to them about it. In your Apple Account settings, you can remove yourself as a Legacy Contact at any time, which also deletes the access key.

If a Legacy Contact is unexpectedly removed from your account

A Legacy Contact you recently added to your Apple Account via iMessage might be removed automatically if they don’t open the iMessage. If your Legacy Contact uses an Apple device, some features work only if:

  • They have an Apple device running iOS 15.2, iPadOS 15.2, or macOS Monterey 12.1

  • They have iMessage turned on

If they don’t have a compatible device, you can add them again choose to Print a Copy of their access key.
