Manage content tokens in Apple Business Essentials
Third-party device management services assign content to devices or users by communicating with Apple Business Essentials. For your service to link and communicate, a content token is required. Contact your developer for specific information about installing the token in your service. The following events invalidate the token:
Annual expiration: Content tokens expire annually, so make note of your token’s renewal date upon linking. To avoid interruption of service, remember to download an updated token and upload it to your organization’s device management service before your current token expires.
Password changes: If the account that downloads the token and links the device management service to Apple Business Essentials changes their password, the token becomes invalid.
Important: If your organization has a monthly subscription to Apple Business Essentials, Apple Business Essentials uses the content token for your primary location to assign app licenses. Another device management service can’t use that content token. If your organization uploaded the content token to a device management service prior to beginning a monthly subscription to Apple Business Essentials, you need to remove it to avoid inconsistencies in app license inventory and app assignment failures.
Using content tokens in third-party device management services
In Apple Business Essentials, another device management service can use content tokens that represent locations other than the primary location. To use a token with a third-party device management service:
In Apple Business Essentials, sign in with a user who has the role of Administrator.
Create an additional location if one doesn’t already exist. See Configure locations.
Transfer any licenses you want to use in the new location. See Transfer licenses to another location.
Download a content token
