sidebar

Sidebars are the areas on the left and right side of your document that you can close and open as needed to access formatting controls, page thumbnails, and more. To open a sidebar, do any of the following:

  • Click the View button in the toolbar, then choose Show Page Thumbnails. You can click a thumbnail to see which pages belong to a section in a word-processing document, or drag thumbnails to rearrange pages in a page layout document.

  • Click the Format button in the toolbar. When the Format button is selected, the sidebar shows controls for formatting whatever is selected in the document. For example, if text is selected, you see controls for changing the font, text size, or style. In a page layout document, if nothing is selected, the sidebar shows page layout controls.

  • Click the Document button in the toolbar. When the Document button is selected, the sidebar shows controls for formatting the document, such as the page orientation and header and footer positions.

If either the Format or Document sidebar is already open, clicking its button again closes the sidebar.

To close the Page Thumbnails sidebar, click the View button , then choose Hide Page Thumbnails.
