Play music together in a car with SharePlay and Apple Music

Everyone in the car can play and control music directly from their iPhone. If you’ve subscribed to Apple Music, you can host a SharePlay session in the car. Then passengers with an iPhone can join your SharePlay session.

Here's what you need

To host a SharePlay session in the car, you’ll need:

  • A subscription to Apple Music

  • An iPhone updated to the latest version of iOS

You don’t need an Apple Music subscription to join a SharePlay session in the car. As long as someone with an Apple Music subscription is hosting a SharePlay session in the car, you can join the session from your iPhone.

How to host a SharePlay session in a car

  1. Before you start driving, connect your iPhone to CarPlay or Bluetooth in your car.

  2. In CarPlay or on your iPhone, open the Apple Music app.

  3. Go to Now Playing:

    • In CarPlay, tap the Now Playing icon.

    • In the Apple Music app, tap the player at the bottom of the screen.

  4. In Now Playing, tap SharePlay button to:

    • Tap the Green tick to approve passengers to join your SharePlay session.

    • Tap End to stop the SharePlay session in the car.

    • Allow passengers to connect by scanning the QR code.

How to join a SharePlay session in the car

  1. Make sure someone is hosting a SharePlay session in the car.

  2. If you didn’t receive the notification

    If you didn't get the notification, here are two other ways to connect:

    • In the host’s Apple Music app, go to Now Playing, tap the SharePlay button, then scan the QR code.

    • On your iPhone, open the Apple Music app and tap the player at the bottom to go to Now Playing. Tap the AirPlay button, then tap the host’s car.

  3. Wait for the host to approve.

  4. Use the Apple Music app on your iPhone to play and control music in the car.

If you didn’t receive a notification to join a SharePlay session in the car

  • Check that Music notifications are turned on: on your iPhone, go to Settings > Notifications > Music and turn on Allow Notifications.

  • Make sure Do Not Disturb is turned off on your iPhone: swipe down from the top right-hand corner of your screen to open Control Centre. Then tap Focus.
