Before you can buy anything from the iTunes Store, iBooks Store, or App Store,1 or buy iCloud storage, you need an Apple ID. When you create an Apple ID to make purchases, you need to provide a payment method. If you have an unpaid balance or your payment method was declined, you’ll need to set up an acceptable form of payment before you can make a purchase.
You can typically use these methods:
- Credit or debit cards
- Store credit, from redeeming App Store & iTunes Gift Cards or Apple Music Gift Cards
- Country- or region-specific additional methods

If a family member has store credit on their Apple ID, then the credit is used before any remainder is charged to the organizer's payment method. When setting up Family Sharing, the organizer is prompted to change their payment to a valid method for Family Sharing (if they haven’t already). They can also change to a different valid method for Family Sharing at any time or turn purchase sharing on or off.
If you're using Family Sharing and you're the family organizer, you can use the following payment methods:
- Credit and debit cards
- Some additional payment methods available in select countries or regions (Alipay, China UnionPay, mobile phone billing, TrueMoney)
You can also create an account for a child under 133 using these payment methods, with the exception of mobile phone billing.
