Set up the Apple TV Remote in Control Center

If you’ve set up your iOS device to control your Apple TV, then the Apple TV Remote is automatically added to Control Center when you update to the latest version of iOS.

If you haven’t set up your iOS device to control your Apple TV or have an earlier version of iOS, you can manually add the Apple TV Remote to Control Center. Just go to Settings > Control Center > Customize Controls and tap Add next to Apple TV Remote.

Then set up the Apple TV Remote in Control Center:

  1. Open Control Center:
    • On iPhone X or later or iPad with iOS 12 or later: Swipe down from the upper-right corner of the screen.
    • On iPhone 8 or earlier or iOS 11 or earlier: Swipe up from the bottom edge of any screen.
  2. Tap the Apple TV Remote.
  3. Tap your Apple TV from the list.
  4. Enter the four-digit passcode that appears on your TV screen.

The Apple TV Remote in Control Center works only with Apple TV 4K and Apple TV (4th generation).

Set up the Apple TV Remote app

To control an Apple TV (3rd generation), download the Apple TV Remote app from the App Store.

  1. Make sure that you have the latest software for your Apple TV and your iOS device.
  2. Download the Apple TV Remote app from the App Store on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. If you already have it, check that you have the latest version. To find out, open the App Store and tap Updates.
  3. Connect your iOS device to the same Wi-Fi network as your Apple TV.
  4. Open the Apple TV Remote app on your iOS device, tap Add Apple TV, then tap your Apple TV. Don't see it?
  5. Enter the four-digit code that appears on your TV. If the code doesn’t appear and you can control your Apple TV, your iOS device is already paired and you can start using the app.
