Before installing new software, it's a good idea to back up your device to make sure that you have a copy of your important information. Choose your backup method.
Check compatibility
You will only see updates that are compatible with your current software version. If you have not upgraded to the most current release, you will not see the option to install the newest release.

Install iPadOS 17
When you update to the latest version of iPadOS, your data and settings remain unchanged.
Update iPad automatically
To turn on automatic updates:
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates.
- Turn on Download iPadOS Updates and Install iPadOS Updates.
When an update is available, iPad downloads and installs the update overnight while charging and connected to Wi-Fi. You’re notified before an update is installed.
To turn off automatic updates, go to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates.
Update iPad manually
To check for and install software updates, go to Settings > General > Software Update.
The screen shows the currently installed version of iPadOS and whether an update is available.
