Use AirTag and Find My to keep track of your personal items

You can use AirTag and Find My to keep track of your personal items, like keys, backpacks and more. If your item is nearby, you can use Precision Finding to help you find it, even if it’s stuck between sofa cushions or hiding in a stack of letters.

Use Find Nearby on your iPhone to pinpoint the location of your item with Precision Finding

Find Nearby works on iPhone 15 and later. Environmental factors, including wall materials or objects between your iPhone and your AirTag, may affect performance.

  1. Open the Find My app, then tap Items.

  2. Tap the item that’s connected to your AirTag, then tap Find Nearby. Find out what to do if you can’t tap Find Nearby.

In the Find My app on iPhone, find an AirTag that’s attached to your house keys or other personal item.
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions and move around the space until your iPhone connects to your AirTag.

  4. Follow the distance and direction information displayed on your iPhone.

  5. Your iPhone will vibrate as you get closer to the AirTag. Tap Play Sound to hear a series of beeps that helps you find your AirTag.

If your iPhone says that it requires more light, uncover the camera or tap the Turn Torch On button.

If the Find Nearby button doesn't appear

If you can’t see Find Nearby, check that your device meets the minimum requirements for Precision Finding and make sure you’ve turned on Location Access for Find My.

Check that your device meets the requirements for Precision Finding

  • Your iPhone must support Ultra Wideband.

  • To ensure all of your items appear in Find My, update your iPhone to the latest iOS. AirTag (2nd Generation) requires iOS 26.2.1 or later.

Turn on Location Access for Find My

  1. Open the Settings app.

  2. Tap Privacy & Security, then choose Location Services. Check that you’ve turned it on.

  3. Scroll down and tap Find My.

  4. Choose how you want Find My to access your location. For the most accurate location, turn on Precise Location.

Still can't see Find Nearby? Your AirTag may be out of range of your iPhone. Try using Find My to find it on a map, get directions to its location or play a sound on the AirTag’s built-in speaker. When you’re within range, you can try using Precision Finding again.

If you loan someone a personal item with an AirTag attached

If you loan someone your keys or another personal item that has an AirTag attached, you can share the AirTag with the other person. That way, they can use Find My and Precision Finding to locate the item, and they won't receive Tracking Notifications.
