Face ID Diagnostics & Privacy

Face ID Diagnostics is designed to protect your information and enable you to choose what you share.


  • You may be invited to enable Face ID Diagnostics by AppleCare. It can be made available upon request, after an approval process.
  • When you enroll in Face ID Diagnostics, your existing Face ID data will be deleted. An icon will appear in the status bar whenever Face ID data is being recorded. Face ID Diagnostics will collect infrared images, depth maps, and related data on your iPhone for up to ten days after it has been set up. You will be able to review Face ID images that have been stored on your device and decide whether to submit these images and related data to Apple.
  • Data you choose to submit during a diagnostics session can be linked to your Apple ID for up to 90 days to assist in troubleshooting. After 90 days, data will be de-linked from your Apple ID and Apple may continue to use this information to improve Face ID.

When you enroll in Face ID Diagnostics, your existing Face ID data will be deleted, and you will be asked to set up Face ID Diagnostics. After Face ID Diagnostics has been set up, an icon will appear in the status bar whenever Face ID data is being recorded. Face ID Diagnostics will collect infrared images, depth maps, and related data on your iPhone for up to ten days after it has been set up. After 40 days, all data collected by Face ID Diagnostics will be deleted from your iPhone. You can disable Face ID Diagnostics at any time in Settings.

An AppleCare advisor may contact you to follow up on Face ID Diagnostics. During this diagnostics session, you will be able to review Face ID images that have been stored on your device and decide whether to submit these images and related data to Apple. When you submit images, information about your use of Face ID Diagnostics, such as the time and environment in which Face ID attempted to unlock your iPhone, will be sent to Apple. You can initiate a diagnostics session by calling AppleCare up to one month after enrollment in Face ID Diagnostics.

Data you choose to submit during a diagnostics session will be linked to your Apple ID for up to 90 days to assist in troubleshooting. After 90 days, data will be de-linked from your Apple ID and Apple may continue to use this information to improve Face ID.

By enabling Face ID Diagnostics and submitting data, you agree and consent to Apple’s and its subsidiaries’ and agents’ transmission, collection, maintenance, processing and use of this information as described above.
