Change the settings of your AirPods and AirPods Pro

Change the name of your AirPods, change what happens when you double-tap your AirPods or press-and-hold AirPods Pro and more.

Name your AirPods

  1. Open your charging case.

  2. On your iPhone or iPad, go to the Settings app, then tap Bluetooth.

  3. Tap the name of your AirPods.

  4. Tap the More Info buttonNo alt supplied for Image next to your AirPods.

  5. Tap the name of your AirPods.

  6. Enter a new name for your AirPods.

  7. Tap Done.

Change the press-and-hold action on AirPods Pro, AirPods 4 (ANC), and AirPods 5 (both models)

AirPods Pro, AirPods 4 (ANC), and AirPods 5 (both models) have three listening modes: Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency mode, and Adaptive Audio. You can also turn Listening Mode off. By default, when you press and hold the force sensor on the stem of your left or right AirPod, your AirPods switch between Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency mode. You can change which listening modes the press-and-hold action uses:

  1. Open your charging case.

  2. On your iPhone or iPad, go to the Settings app.

  3. Tap the name of your AirPods.

  4. Under Press and Hold AirPods, tap Left or Right, then make sure Listening Mode is selected. If Press and Hold AirPods is not displayed, first tap Controls & Gestures.

  5. Select the two or three listening modes you want to use with the press-and-hold action. If both AirPods are set to change listening modes, a change to the press-and-hold action settings on one AirPod will apply to both.

  6. To set the press-and-hold action to use Siri, tap Left or Right, then select Siri. You can have one AirPod set for Siri and the other set to change listening modes.

Press and Hold settings for an AirPods earbud.

You can also switch between listening modes in Control Centre.

If you have Camera Remote set to use the press-and-hold action and have a supported camera app open, press-and-hold won’t change listening modes. Find out how to use AirPods with supported camera apps on your iPhone or iPad.

Change the double-tap action on AirPods 1 and 2

You can choose what you want to happen when you double-tap one of your AirPods 1 or 2:

  1. Open your charging case.

  2. With your AirPods in your ears and connected to your iPhone or iPad, go to the Settings app.

  3. Tap the More Info buttonNo alt supplied for Image next to the name of your AirPods.

  4. Select the left or right AirPod to choose which AirPod you’d like to double-tap for Siri, playing or pausing audio content or skipping between tracks.

Turn Automatic Ear Detection on or off

By default, AirPods sense when they’re in your ear and receive the audio from your device. AirPods also pause and resume playback when you remove one of your AirPods or stop playback – and won’t resume – when you remove both. When you have Automatic Ear Detection on and you aren’t wearing your AirPods, audio will play through your device’s speakers. To turn Automatic Ear Detection on or off, wear your AirPods, and make sure they’re connected to your device. Then:

  • On your iPhone or iPad, go to the Settings app, tap the name of your AirPods, then turn Automatic Ear Detection on or off. If Automatic Ear Detection is not displayed, first tap Audio & Routing.

  • On your Mac, choose Apple menu, click System Settings, then click the name of your AirPods. If Automatic Ear Detection is not displayed, first click Audio & Routing.

When you turn off Automatic Ear Detection, these features are off and all audio is played to your AirPods, whether or not you’re wearing them.

Set Microphone to left, right or automatic

There’s a microphone in each AirPod, so you can make phone calls and use Siri. By default, Microphone is set to Automatic, so either of your AirPods can act as the microphone. If you’re only using one AirPod, that AirPod will be the microphone. To set Microphone to left or right, wear your AirPods, and make sure they’re connected to your device. Then:

  • On your iPhone or iPad, go to the Settings app, tap the name of your AirPods, then tap Microphone. If Microphone is not displayed, first tap Audio & Routing. Then, choose between Automatically Switch AirPods, Always Left AirPod, or Always Right AirPod.

  • On your Mac, choose Apple menu, then click System Settings. Click the name of your AirPods, then click Microphone. If Microphone is not displayed, first click Audio & Routing. Then, choose between Automatically Switch AirPods, Always Left AirPod, or Always Right AirPod.

If you set Microphone to Always Left or Always Right, either the right AirPod or the left AirPod uses the microphone even if you remove it from your ear or put it in the case.

Pause media when you fall asleep

If you have AirPods 4 or later or AirPods Pro 2 or later, you can choose to pause media automatically when you fall asleep while listening to audio using your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV. To turn on Pause Media When Falling Asleep, wear your AirPods, and make sure they’re connected to your device. Then:

  • On your iPhone or iPad, go to the Settings app, tap the name of your AirPods, then turn on Pause Media While Falling Asleep. If Pause Media While Falling Asleep is not displayed, first tap Audio & Routing.

  • On your Mac, choose Apple menu, then click System Settings. Click the name of your AirPods, then turn on Pause Media While Falling Asleep. If Pause Media While Falling Asleep is not displayed, first click Audio & Routing.

  • On your Apple TV, open Control Centre, select your AirPods, then turn on Pause Media While Falling Asleep.

Use Custom EQ with your AirPods

You can use a three-band equaliser on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac to personalise the sound signature of your AirPods 4 or later, your AirPods Pro 2 or later, or your AirPods Max 2.
