Remove unused audio files in your Logic Pro for Mac project

Reduce the size of your project using tools within Logic Pro.

You can remove unused audio files in your project to reduce the size of the file. This is a good way to prepare your project for final mix down and mastering, or to share it with someone else. Only remove audio files once you’ve completely finished editing your project, chosen final takes and merged your comp tracks.

Flatten and merge takes, and delete muted tracks and regions

Before you remove unused audio files, you can “clean up” your project’s audio tracks by flattening and merging take folders. This step is optional and isn’t required before deleting unused files.

And if you have any tracks or individual regions in your project that are muted and you don’t foresee needing them going forwards, delete them from the Tracks area or Live Loops grid before removing files.

Remove audio files from a track with multiple regions, takes or comp tracks

If your project has multiple audio regions, takes or comp tracks, you can remove any audio files that you’re not using in your project. Unused audio files are audio files that aren’t in your project’s Tracks area or in a Live Loops cell. For example, if you deleted a track that had audio regions in it, the audio files associated with that track remain in your project.

  1. To see a list of all of the audio files used in your project:

    • Click the Project Audio Browser button then click Project.

    • Or choose Window > Open Project Audio to open the browser in its own window.

  2. Click Edit in the Project Browser, then choose Select Unused from the menu. Audio files that aren’t currently being used in your project are highlighted in the Project Browser. You may have to scroll down to see the selected audio files.

  3. Click Audio File in the Project Browser again, then choose Delete [number] Files from the menu.

Remove audio files in unused Track Alternatives

If you have track alternatives in your project and you no longer need some of the alternatives, you can remove the audio files associated with those alternatives.

In a Logic Pro track header, click the Track Alternatives buttonthe Track Alternatives button, then choose Delete Inactive from the shortcut menu. All track alternatives other than the active one are deleted, including any regions they contain.

You can then remove the audio files in the Project Audio Browser if you want to reduce the overall amount of space your project uses.

Remove audio files from hidden tracks

You can remove the audio files from hidden tracks if you no longer need those tracks and their associated files.

  1. To unhide hidden tracks, click the Toggle Hide View button or choose Track > Toggle Hide View.

  2. Delete the hidden tracks or delete the muted regions in the hidden tracks that you no longer need.

  3. Remove the audio files from your project in the Project Audio Browser.
