Change Live Speech settings for accessibility on Mac
On your Mac, use Live Speech settings to turn on Live Speech (to have what you type spoken out loud using synthesised speech), add phrases you use often and more.
To change these settings, choose Apple menu > System Settings, click Accessibility in the sidebar, go to Speech on the right, then click Live Speech. (You may need to scroll down.)
Open Live Speech settings for me
Option | Description |
---|---|
Live Speech | Turn Live Speech on or off. See Have what you type spoken out loud. |
Preferred language | Choose the language you type to speak. Note: Live Speech is not available in all languages. See the Apple Support article Languages supported by VoiceOver. |
Voice | Choose the voice used to speak what you type. You can choose from the provided system voices or use a Personal Voice. To learn how to record and create a Personal Voice, see Create a Personal Voice. |
Font size | Set the text size for the Live Speech window. |
Categories | View and edit the phrases you’ve used recently and phrases you’ve saved. See Add or remove saved phrases. |
Add Category | Organise your saved phrases into categories, such as for different activities — like work, school or gaming. See Create categories for saved phrases. |
Tip: You can use Accessibility Shortcuts to quickly turn Live Speech on or off.
