iPhone and the Environment

iPhone 17e is designed to reduce environmental impact:16

Progress toward Apple 2030

Apple 2030 is our commitment to be carbon neutral for our entire carbon footprint. Our plan to decarbonize products is rigorous and focuses on transitioning to low-carbon electricity, designing with recycled and low-carbon materials, and prioritizing lower-carbon ways of shipping products, like ocean freight.

Materials

iPhone 17e is made with 30% recycled content,17 including:

  • 85% recycled aluminum in the enclosure

  • 100% recycled cobalt and 95% recycled lithium in the battery

  • 100% recycled copper foil and wire in the inductive charger

  • 100% recycled gold plating and tin solder in all Apple-designed printed circuit boards

  • 100% recycled rare earth elements in all magnets

  • 80% recycled steel in the back glass support plate, speaker, and receiver

  • 100% recycled tungsten in the Taptic Engine

Energy

  • 55% of manufacturing electricity for iPhone 17e is sourced from renewable electricity18

Packaging

  • 100% fiber-based packaging19

Waste

  • No established final assembly sites generate waste sent to landfill as part of Apple’s Zero Waste Program20

Smarter chemistry21

All of the materials used in Apple products, accessories, and packaging are covered by the requirements of our Regulated Substances Specification, which was one of the first in industry to restrict the use of key substances of concern. See the latest Environmental Progress Report to understand Apple’s recent efforts in phasing out these chemistries.

*To identify your iPhone model number, see support.apple.com/108044. For details on 5G and LTE support, contact your carrier and see apple.com/hk/en/iphone/cellular. Cellular technology support is based on iPhone model number and configuration for GSM networks.

  1. Available space is less and varies due to many factors. A standard configuration uses approximately 12GB to 24GB of space, including iOS 26 with its latest features and Apple apps that can be deleted. Apple Intelligence on‑device models use approximately 7GB of space and can be deleted if Apple Intelligence is turned off. Turning on Apple Intelligence will download the models again. Apple apps that can be deleted use about 4.5GB of space, and you can download them back from the App Store. Storage capacity subject to change based on software version, settings, and iPhone model.

  2. Size and weight vary by configuration and manufacturing process.

  3. iPhone 17e is splash, water, and dust resistant and was tested under controlled laboratory conditions with a rating of IP68 under IEC standard 60529 (maximum depth of 6 meters up to 30 minutes). Splash, water, and dust resistance are not permanent conditions. Resistance might decrease as a result of normal wear. Do not attempt to charge a wet iPhone; refer to the user guide for cleaning and drying instructions. Liquid damage not covered under warranty.

  4. Apple Intelligence is available in beta. Some features may not be available in all regions or languages. For feature and language availability and system requirements, see support.apple.com/121115.

  5. All battery claims depend on network configuration and many other factors; actual results will vary. Battery has limited recharge cycles and may eventually need to be replaced. Battery life and charge cycles vary by use and settings. See apple.com/hk/en/batteries and apple.com/hk/en/iphone/battery.html for more information.

  6. Testing conducted by Apple in January 2026 using preproduction iPhone 17e units and software, and USB‑C Charge Cable with Apple 20W USB‑C Power Adapter (Model A2305). Fast‑charge testing conducted with drained iPhone units. Times measured from the appearance of the Apple logo as the unit started up. Charge time varies with settings and environmental factors; actual results will vary.

  7. iPhone 17e can detect a severe car crash and call for help. Requires a cellular connection or Wi‑Fi calling.

  8. Data plan required. 5G, Gigabit LTE, VoLTE, and Wi-Fi calling are available in select markets and through select carriers. Speeds are based on theoretical throughput and vary based on site conditions and carrier. For details on 5G and LTE support, contact your carrier and see apple.com/hk/en/iphone/cellular.

  9. Visual intelligence is available on any Apple Intelligence–enabled iPhone. Some capabilities may not be available in all languages and regions. For more details, see support.apple.com/121115#visual-intelligence.

  10. MagSafe wireless charging up to 15W with 20W power adapter or higher.

  11. Use of an eSIM requires a carrier that supports eSIM and a wireless service plan. See your carrier for details. To learn more, visit apple.com/hk/en/esim.

  12. Available only in select cities and transit systems. Requires eligible device and OS version. See here for details.

  13. FaceTime calling requires a FaceTime‑enabled device for the caller and recipient and a Wi‑Fi connection. Availability over a cellular network depends on carrier policies; data charges may apply.

  14. Siri may not be available in all languages or in all areas, and features may vary by area. Internet access required. Cellular data charges may apply. Siri has been optimized for Cantonese in Hong Kong.

  15. Wireless broadband recommended; fees may apply.

  16. Data accurate as of product launch.

  17. Product recycled or renewable content is the mass of certified recycled material relative to the overall mass of the device, not including packaging or in-box accessories.

  18. We estimate the percentage of electricity-related emissions in our manufacturing that is sourced from low-carbon electricity by attributing to our carbon model low-carbon energy procured by our suppliers in the prior fiscal year, based on the supplier manufacturing allocations at time of product launch. Included in this number is only low-carbon electricity that Apple or its suppliers have procured as part of Apple’s Supplier Clean Energy Program.

  19. Breakdown of U.S. retail packaging by weight. Adhesives, inks, and coatings are excluded from our calculations.

  20. All established final assembly supplier sites — those that have been Apple suppliers for more than one year — for iPhone 17e are third-party verified as Zero Waste by UL LLC (UL 2799 Standard). UL requires at least 90% diversion through methods other than waste to energy to achieve Zero Waste to Landfill (Silver 90–94%, Gold 95–99%, and Platinum 100%) designations.

  21. Apple’s Regulated Substances Specification describes Apple’s restrictions on the use of certain chemical substances in materials in Apple products, accessories, manufacturing processes, and packaging used for shipping products to Apple’s end‑customers. Restrictions are derived from international laws or directives, regulatory agencies, eco‑label requirements, environmental standards, and Apple policies. Every Apple product is free of PVC and phthalates except for AC power cords in India, Thailand (for two‑prong AC power cords), and South Korea, where we continue to seek government approval for our PVC and phthalates replacement. Apple products comply with the European Union Directive 2011/65/EU and its amendments, including exemptions for the use of lead such as high-temperature solder. Apple is working to phase out the use of these exempted substances for new products where technically possible.

Features are subject to change. Some features, applications, and services may not be available in all regions or all languages and may require specific hardware and software. For more information, see Feature Availability.
