AirTag and the Environment

Progress toward Apple 2030

Apple 2030 is our commitment to be carbon neutral for our entire carbon footprint. Our plan to decarbonize products is rigorous and focuses on transitioning to low-carbon electricity, designing with recycled and low-carbon materials, and prioritizing lower-carbon ways of shipping products, like ocean freight.

Materials

  • 85% recycled plastic in the enclosure

  • 100% recycled gold plating in all Apple‑designed printed circuit boards

  • 100% recycled tin solder in all Apple‑designed printed circuit boards

  • 100% recycled rare earth elements in all magnets

Packaging

  • 100% fiber-based packaging5

Waste

  • No established final assembly sites generate waste sent to landfill as part of Apple’s Zero Waste Program.6

Smarter Chemistry7

All of the materials used in Apple products, accessories, and packaging are covered by the requirements of our Regulated Substances Specification, which was one of the first in industry to restrict the use of key substances of concern. See the latest Environmental Progress Report to understand Apple’s recent efforts in phasing out these chemistries.

  1. Compared with the previous-generation AirTag. Improved Precision Finding works with AirTag (2nd generation) paired with iPhone Air or iPhone 15 or later (excluding iPhone 16e); availability varies by region.

  2. Precision Finding on Apple Watch requires an Apple Watch Series 9, or later, or Apple Watch Ultra 2, or later, with watchOS 26.2.1.

  3. Testing conducted by Apple in December 2025 using preproduction AirTag (2nd generation) units and software paired with iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air units running preproduction software. Battery life based on everyday average usage of playing sound and Precision Finding. Battery life varies with usage, environmental conditions, replacement battery manufacturer, and many other factors; actual results will vary.

  4. AirTag is splash, water, and dust resistant and was tested under controlled laboratory conditions with a rating of IP67 under IEC standard 60529 (maximum depth of 1 meter up to 30 minutes). Splash, water, and dust resistance are not permanent conditions and resistance might decrease as a result of normal wear. Refer to the Safety and Handling documentation for cleaning and drying instructions.

  5. Based on retail packaging as shipped by Apple. Breakdown of U.S. retail packaging by weight. Adhesives, inks, and coatings are excluded from our calculations of plastic content and packaging weight.

  6. All established final assembly supplier sites—those that have been Apple suppliers for more than one year—for AirTag are third-party verified as Zero Waste by UL LLC (UL 2799 Standard). UL requires at least 90 percent diversion through methods other than waste to energy to achieve Zero Waste to Landfill (Silver 90–94 percent, Gold 95–99 percent, and Platinum 100 percent) designations.

  7. Apple’s Regulated Substances Specification describes Apple’s restrictions on the use of certain chemical substances in materials in Apple products, accessories, manufacturing processes, and packaging used for shipping products to Apple’s end-customers. Restrictions are derived from international laws or directives, regulatory agencies, eco-label requirements, environmental standards, and Apple policies. Every Apple product is free of PVC and phthalates except for AC power cords in India, Thailand (for 2-prong AC power cords), and South Korea, where we continue to seek government approval for our PVC and phthalates replacement. Apple products comply with the European Union Directive 2011/65/EU and its amendments, including exemptions for the use of lead such as high-temperature solder. Apple is working to phase out the use of these exempted substances for new products where technically possible.
