iPhone 13 mini Top Speaker (mmWave Antenna)

Before You Begin

 Warning

Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.

Important

If your iPhone doesn’t have an mmWave antenna, follow the instructions in Top Speaker.

Remove the following parts before you begin:

Tools

  • 5.4-inch repair tray

  • ESD-safe tweezers

  • JCIS bit

  • Nitrile or lint-free gloves

  • Nylon probe (black stick)

  • SIM-eject tool

  • Super screw bit

  • Torque driver (blue, 0.65 kgf cm)

  • Torque driver (gray, 0.55 kgf cm)

 Caution

To avoid damaging the lenses, don’t touch the TrueDepth camera assembly or nearby parts.

Removal

  1. Place the enclosure in the repair tray with the Lightning connector facing the cutout.

  2. Use ESD-safe tweezers to slowly remove the polyester film strip from the mmWave antenna connector cowling.

  3. Use a torque driver and the JCIS bit to remove the three crosshead screws from the mmWave antenna connector cowling in the order shown. Set aside the screws. Remove the cowling and save it for reassembly.

    •  Caution: To avoid stripping the screws, ensure that the JCIS bit is locked into the torque driver. Don’t scrape the torque driver against the logic board.

  4. Separate the end of the mmWave antenna flex cable from the connector.

  5. Lift the ends of the 11 flex cables off the connectors in the order shown.

  6. Use a torque driver and the JCIS bit to remove one crosshead screw from the lower end of the logic board. Set aside the screw.

  7. Use a torque driver and the super screw bit to remove the super screw from the upper end of the logic board. Set aside the screw.

  8. Remove the camera. Then continue to step 9.

  9. Use the flat end of the black stick to separate the adhesive between the mmWave antenna flex cable and the camera well.

  10. Remove the enclosure from the repair tray.

  11. Insert a paper clip or a SIM-eject tool into the hole next to the SIM tray.

  12. Push the paper clip or SIM-eject tool toward the enclosure to eject the SIM tray. Then remove the SIM tray and save it for reassembly.

  13. Place the enclosure in the repair tray with the Lightning connector facing the cutout.

  14. Use ESD-safe tweezers to push the SIM tray ejector to its original position as shown.

  15. Gently lift the mmWave antenna and the logic board up and out of the enclosure.

    • Important: Ensure that the mmWave antenna stays attached to the logic board.

    •  Caution

      • Don’t damage the Apple Pay flex cable as you lift the logic board out of the enclosure.

      • Don’t damage the logic board when removing it from the enclosure. If damage occurs, replace the iPhone.

  16. Use a torque driver and the JCIS bit to remove one crosshead screw from the top speaker. Set aside the screw.

  17. Use a torque driver and the super screw bit to remove one super screw from the top speaker. Set aside the screw.

  18. Put on the gloves.

  19. Remove the top speaker from the enclosure.

Reassembly

  1. Put on the gloves.

  2. Inspect the TrueDepth camera. Ensure that the top edge of the camera is under the lip of the enclosure.

    •  Caution: If the TrueDepth camera is positioned incorrectly, use the black stick to move it into the correct position.

  3. Tilt the top speaker and lower it into position.

    •  Caution: Ensure that the gasket is installed on the top vent and not torn or damaged. If the gasket is damaged, replace the top speaker.

  4. Use the blue torque driver and super screw bit to install one new super screw (923-06675) into the top speaker.

  5. Use the gray torque driver and JCIS bit to install one new crosshead screw (923- 06676) into the top speaker.

  6. Position the logic board and the mmWave antenna in the enclosure as shown.

    •  Caution: Ensure that no flex cables are trapped under the logic board.

  7. Follow camera reassembly steps 1 through 7 to reinstall the camera in the enclosure. Then continue to step 8 below.

  8. Press the ends of the remaining nine flex cables to the connectors on the logic board in the order shown.

  9. Use the blue torque driver and super screw bit to install one new super screw (923-06673) into the logic board.

  10. Use the gray torque driver and JCIS bit to install one new crosshead screw (923-06676) into the logic board.

  11. Inspect the mmWave antenna flex cable to ensure that it’s behind the Apple Pay flex cable.

  12. Press the end of the mmWave antenna flex cable to the connector.

  13. Position the mmWave antenna connector cowling over the mmWave antenna flex cable.

  14. Use the gray torque driver and JCIS bit to install three new crosshead screws (923-06677) into the mmWave antenna connector cowling in the order shown.

    •  Caution: To avoid stripping the screws, ensure that the JCIS bit is locked into the torque driver. Don’t scrape the torque driver against the logic board.

  15. Position a replacement polyester film strip over the mmWave antenna connector cowling. Use the flat end of the black stick to press evenly along the length of the strip to adhere it to the cowling. Remove the blue release liner.

  16. Remove the enclosure from the repair tray.

  17. Press the SIM tray back into the side of the enclosure.

  18. Place the enclosure in the repair tray with the Lightning connector facing the cutout.

  19. Reinstall the Taptic Engine . Then continue to step 20.

  20. Follow all Battery reassembly steps to install the replacement battery.
