Try quick troubleshooting steps

  1. Clean all camera lenses with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth—for example, a lens cloth.

    • Important: Unplug all cables and turn off the iPhone first. Don’t use products containing bleach or hydrogen peroxide. Avoid getting moisture in any openings and don’t submerge the iPhone in any cleaning agents. Don’t use compressed air.

  2. If any camera preview shows an obscured image, check whether the camera is blocked.

  3. Remove any case, accessory, or film that may block the camera or flash or that places a magnet near the camera. Remove all accessories before testing. Magnetic accessories might interfere with iPhone cameras.

  4. Inspect the iPhone for damage around the camera. Any damage to the camera, such as from dropping the iPhone, may require a camera repair.

  5. If the Camera app isn’t available, verify that it hasn’t been restricted by a configuration profile. Go to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management and tap the profile. Then check for any restrictions on the Camera app.

Run manual and diagnostic tests

If the issue wasn’t resolved by following a support article or trying the quick troubleshooting steps, run these manual and diagnostic tests to help isolate the cause of the issue:

  1. Take a photo from the lock screen using the Camera app to test camera quality.

  2. Run the Mobile Resource Inspector (MRI) diagnostic suite.

  3. Run the Camera Image Quality diagnostic suite. Follow the diagnostic suite instructions to document any anomalies or distortions present while performing the test.

Open and inspect the iPhone

If the issue wasn’t resolved or isolated by following support articles or running diagnostic tests, refer to the iPhone repair manual to open and inspect the iPhone. A damaged or out-of-place part may be causing one of the issues.

  1. Follow repair manual procedures to open the device.

  2. Disconnect the group of flex cables connecting the affected camera to the logic board.

  3. Examine each connector for signs of damage or debris.

  4. If camera flex connectors appear normal and not damaged, reconnect the group of flex cables. Gently reseat each connector by lightly pressing on it with two fingers.

  5. Reassemble by installing any removed parts and closing the device.

  6. Retest the device camera.

  • For outer front camera issues, replace the outer front camera.

  • For FaceTime camera issues, replace the FaceTime camera.

  • For camera issues, replace the camera.

  • After the repair is completed, turn on the device and verify that all cameras are functional.
