Try quick troubleshooting steps

  1. Remove any covers or cases. Then verify that the button functions as expected.

  2. Restart the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn’t restart, force restart the iPhone.

  3. Clean the iPhone. Clean dirt or debris from the areas around all buttons with a clean lint-free cloth.

  4. Ensure that your fingers are clean and dry. Then test all buttons.

    • Note: Moisture, lotions, sweat, or oils on fingers may affect button functionality.

  5. If you can isolate the issue to the Taptic Engine, go to Taptic Engine or Haptic Feedback Issues.

  6. Confirm that Camera Control isn’t disabled, which could be mistaken for a service issue. On the device, go into Settings > Camera > Camera Control. Then verify that Launch Camera isn’t set to None.

Run manual and diagnostic tests

If the issue wasn’t resolved by following a support article or trying the quick troubleshooting steps, run these manual and diagnostic tests to help isolate the cause of the issue:

  1. Run the Mobile Resource Inspector (MRI) diagnostic suite.

  2. Manually activate each button to verify functionality.

Open and inspect the iPhone

If the issue wasn’t resolved or isolated by following support articles or running diagnostic tests, refer to the iPhone repair manual to open and inspect the iPhone. A damaged or out-of-place part may be causing one of the issues.

  1. Follow repair manual procedures to open the device.

  2. Disconnect the flex cable connecting the affected button to the logic board.

  3. Examine each connector for signs of damage or debris.

  4. If all connectors appear normal and not damaged, reconnect the flex cable.

  5. Reassemble by installing any removed parts and closing the device.

  6. Retest all device buttons.
