iPhone Air Front Camera

Before You Begin

Warning

  • Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.

  • The front camera includes one or more lasers. Disassembly of the front camera, damage to the front camera, or failure to use genuine Apple parts could expose you to hazardous infrared laser emissions, possibly resulting in injuries to eyes or skin.

Tools

  • Adjustable torque driver (10–34 Ncm)

  • Crosshead 50 mm bit

  • ESD-safe tweezers

  • Nylon probe (black stick)

  • Torque driver (green, 0.45 kgf cm)

  • Trilobe 44 mm half-moon bit

Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.

Caution

Avoid touching the grounding springs on the front camera.

Important

If you replace this part, it's required to run Repair Assistant in order to enable security features. Repair Assistant will be available on the device after you’ve completed all reassembly steps.

Removal

Note: If you’ve already completed the removal steps, skip to reassembly.

Caution

Wearing nitrile gloves is recommended to prevent contamination of the camera lenses.

Important

Complete back glass removal steps 1 through 3. Then continue to step 1.

  1. Use a torque driver and the trilobe bit to remove five trilobe screws.

  2. Use a torque driver and the crosshead bit to remove two crosshead screws. Then complete the entire step before continuing to the next step.

    • Remove the back glass cowling and the logic board cowling and save them for reassembly.

    • Lift the ends of the battery flex cable (1) and the back glass flex cable (2) off the connectors.

      • Caution: You must disconnect the battery flex cable first to ensure that the iPhone stays turned off.

    • Hold the back glass by the edges. Pull the tabs on the suction cups to release them from the back glass. Then set the back glass facedown on a clean, flat surface.

  3. Remove the front camera connector cowling and save it for reassembly.

    • The front camera flex cables are stacked on top of each other. Lift the end of the top flex cable off the connector. Then lift the end of the other flex cable off the connector.

    • Remove the front camera.

Reassembly

  1. Put on the gloves to prevent contamination of the camera lenses.

  2. Inspect the front camera assembly. If it’s damaged, replace the front camera.

  3. Use ESD-safe tweezers to remove the protective cover from the front camera.

  4. Position the front camera in the enclosure.

    • Caution

      • Don’t touch the front of the front camera assembly after you remove the protective cover.

      • Only press the middle of the front camera to avoid damaging the grounding springs on the sides.

  5. Press the ends of the two front camera flex cables to the connectors.

  6. Reinstall the front camera connector cowling.

  7. Use the green torque driver and trilobe bit to install one new trilobe screw (923-13685) into the cowling.
