iPhone Air Camera

Before You Begin

Warning

Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.

Tools

  • Adjustable torque driver (10–34 Ncm)

  • Crosshead 50 mm bit

  • ESD-safe tweezers

  • Nitrile or lint-free gloves

  • Nylon probe (black stick)

  • Trilobe 44 mm half-moon bit

Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.

Caution

Avoid touching the camera lenses, front camera grounding springs, or nearby parts.

Important

If you replace this part, it’s recommended to run Repair Assistant to finish the repair. Repair Assistant will be available on the device after you’ve completed all reassembly steps.

Removal

Note: If you’ve already completed the removal steps, skip to reassembly.

Important

  • Putting on the gloves and covering the camera lenses to prevent contamination of the camera lenses is recommended.

  • Complete back glass removal steps 1 through 3. Then continue to step 1.

  1. Use a torque driver and the trilobe bit to remove four trilobe screws.

  2. Use a torque driver and crosshead bit to remove four crosshead screws. Then complete the entire step before continuing to the next step.

    • Remove the logic board cowling and the back glass cowling and save them for reassembly.

    • Lift the end of the battery flex cable off the connector (1). Then lift the end of the the back glass flex cable off the connector (2).

      • Caution: You must disconnect the battery flex cable first to ensure that the iPhone stays turned off.

    • Lift the end of the camera flex cable off the connector.

    • Hold the back glass by the edges. Pull the tabs on the suction cups to release them from the back glass. Then set the back glass facedown on a clean, flat surface.

  3. Remove the camera.

    • Caution

      • The camera is held in place by adhesive. Lift the camera toward the bottom left corner of the enclosure to separate the camera from the adhesive.

      • Ensure that you don't damage the microphone 3 flex cable if you use the black stick to lift the camera.

      • If the adhesive remains on the microphone 3 flex cable, do not attempt to remove it.

Reassembly

Important

A protective cover is included with a replacement camera. Leave the cover on while installing the new camera.

  1. Put on the gloves to prevent contamination of the camera lenses.

  2. Inspect the grounding springs on the camera for damage before reassembly. Ensure that the grounding springs aren’t bent or broken.

    • Important: If the grounding springs are broken or bent, you may need to replace the camera.

  3. Position the camera in the enclosure and press for 15 seconds.

    • Caution: If the adhesive is intact in the iPhone, remove the adhesive from the replacement camera and adhere the camera to the existing adhesive on the microphone 3 flex cable.

  4. Press the end of the camera flex cable to the connector.

  5. Set the torque value on the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 13 Ncm. Use the adjustable torque driver and crosshead bit to install one new crosshead screw (923-13695) into the camera.

  6. Set the torque value on the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 22 Ncm. Use the adjustable torque driver and crosshead bit to install one new crosshead screw (923-13971) into the camera.

Reinstall the following part to complete reassembly:

Important

  • Remove the protective cover from the replacement camera before you reinstall the back glass.

  • After you’ve completed all reassembly steps, Repair Assistant will be available on the device and is recommended to finish the repair. Learn how to initiate Repair Assistant.
