If an HDR display is too bright or vivid on Mac

After installing macOS Catalina, you might notice unexpected changes in brightness, colour or contrast on your external HDR display, TV or projector.

If your Mac supports high dynamic range (HDR) video, and it detects that your external display also supports HDR, your Mac might automatically enable HDR for that display. Some external displays might then show incorrect brightness, colour or contrast until properly configured for HDR. Check the documentation for your display to learn how to configure it for HDR.

If you prefer not to use HDR on your external display, you can disable it for that display:

  1. In macOS Catalina 10.15.4 or later, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences.
  2. Click Displays.
  3. In the preferences window that appears on your external display, deselect the High Dynamic Range tickbox.
