Use drop caps in Pages

Learn how to add and edit drop caps in Pages.

A drop cap is a large capital letter that you can insert in text to add style and emphasis. You can add drop caps to body text or text within a shape or text box on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or Mac. You can also do this in Pages on iCloud.com. 

Add or remove a drop cap

To add a drop cap, tap or click to place an insertion point inside the paragraph that you want to begin with a drop cap. Tap or click the Format button , tap or click Text, then select Drop Cap in the inspector.

To remove a drop cap, deselect Drop Cap in the inspector.

Adjust drop cap character settings

To use a drop cap preset style on your iPhone or iPad, tap one of the presets.

To use a preset style on your Mac or on iCloud.com, click the Drop Cap Styles pop-up menu, then click one of the presets.

To customise your drop cap, you change options such as how many lines a drop cap spans (Lines), how many characters are in a drop cap (Characters) and more. Tap Drop Cap Options on iPhone and iPad, or click Options on Mac or on iCloud.com for more ways to style your drop cap.

Change the background of the drop cap

To add a background to your drop cap, tap Drop Cap Options on iPhone and iPad or click Options on Mac or on iCloud.com, then select Background Shape. Once you've added the background, you can add a colour, a border and more:

  • To choose a colour for the background, tap or click the colour picker or the colour wheel.
  • To add a border to the drop cap, tap or click the Border pop-up menu.
  • To adjust the size of the drop cap relative to the background, drag the Character Scale slider.
  • To adjust the roundness of the background shape, drag the Corner Radius slider.

Create a preset style

If you created a custom drop cap, you can save it as a preset style on Mac so you can use it again in your document.

To save a preset style, select text, then click the Drop Cap Styles pop-up menu. Click the right arrow, then click the add button .
