What you need to travel on public transport with Apple Pay
Here's what you need to have to pay for public transport with Apple Pay when Express Travel mode is not enabled:
- A compatible iPhone or Apple Watch. Device requirements vary by region or city. Check with your public transport agency to see which models are supported.
- The latest version of iOS and watchOS
- An Apple ID signed in to iCloud
- An eligible payment card added to Wallet
- Be in a location that supports paying for public transport with Apple Pay
Pay for public transport with Apple Pay
You can pay for journeys using Apple Pay on your iPhone and Apple Watch. Without Express Travel, you must authenticate each public transport purchase with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.

On your iPhone with Face ID
- At the contactless reader, double-click the side button with your iPhone on the Lock screen.**
- Authenticate with Face ID or your passcode.
- Hold the top of your iPhone near the contactless reader.
When it's complete, you will see Done and a tick on the display.
On your iPhone with Touch ID
- At the contactless reader, double-click the Home button with your iPhone on the Lock screen.**
- Authenticate with Touch ID or your passcode.
- Hold the top of your iPhone near the contactless reader.
When it's complete, you will see Done and a tick on the display.
On Apple Watch
- At the contactless reader, double-click the side button.
- Hold the display of your Apple Watch near the contactless reader.
- Wait until you feel a gentle tap.
