Use Express Transit with Apple Pay

Quickly pay for rides with Apple Pay on your iPhone and Apple Watch when you turn on Express Transit mode.

What you need to get started

Here's what you need to start using Express Transit mode with Apple Pay:

Before you start, set up a card in Wallet to use for Express Transit mode with Apple Pay. You can set up a new credit, debit or prepaid card or a new public transport card.

Pay for your ride with Express Transit

With Express Transit mode enabled, you don't have to validate with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode when you pay for rides with Apple Pay on your iPhone and Apple Watch. And you don't need to wake or unlock your device, or open an app.

To use Express Transit mode, your iPhone or Apple Watch must be turned on, but they don't have to be connected to a network.

On iPhone

When you pay for public transport with Apple Pay, hold the top of your iPhone within a few centimetres of the middle of the contactless reader until you feel a vibration. You will see Done and a tick on the display.

On Apple Watch

When you pay for public transport with Apple Pay, hold the display of your Apple Watch within a few centimetres of the middle of the contactless reader until you feel a vibration. You will see Done and a tick on the display.

When you pay at a contactless reader, keep the card or device that you want to pay with separate from your other cards or devices. This can help avoid card clash so that the correct card is charged. Card clash may occur when your card and your device are accidentally used at the same time. Contact your public transport agency to learn more about card clash, or if you think the wrong card was charged.

You can also turn off Express Transit for Apple Pay in the Settings app and use Face ID or Touch ID to pay for public transport.

You can have a payment card and a public transport card enabled for Express Transit mode in the same city. If your public transport agency accepts payment cards and public transport cards, the public transport card is automatically selected by the contactless reader.

If a transaction is not completed, check with your public transport agency to see if Express Transit mode is supported at that location. Then, follow the instructions on the contactless reader. You might need to select another card in Wallet to pay for your ride:

  1. Double-click the side or Home button.
  2. Select a card.
  3. Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.

Express Transit cards with power reserve

On iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR and later, you can use power reserve with your Express Transit cards. Power reserve enables you to quickly pay for rides and is available for up to five hours when your iPhone needs to be charged.

To see if Express Transit cards are available when your iPhone needs to be charged, press the side button. Doing this often may significantly reduce the power reserve for Express Transit cards. If you choose to power off your iPhone, this feature will not be available.
