Expire an old passcode sooner when you change passcodes on your iPhone or iPad

By default, Passcode Reset gives you 72 hours to access your iPhone or iPad using your previous passcode.

If you’ve forgotten a passcode you changed within the last 72 hours, use Passcode Reset to access your iPhone or iPad using your previous passcode temporarily. If you unlock your device this way, you’ll be prompted to change your passcode again immediately.

If you need to expire an old passcode sooner than 72 hours, you can do that in the Settings app:

  1. In the Settings app, tap Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode).

  2. Use Face ID or enter your current passcode.

  3. Tap Expire Previous Passcode Now.

In the Settings app, tap Face ID & Passcode to find the option to expire your old passcode manually.
