Before downloading new software, back up your device to make sure you have a copy of your important information. Choose your backup method.

Check compatibility

You will only see updates that are compatible with your current software version. If you have not downloaded the most current release, you will not see the option to install the latest release.

Download iOS 26

You can set up your iPhone to install system software and updates automatically, or you can check for updates manually in the Software Update settings.

Turn on automatic updates

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Tap General.

  3. Tap Software Update.

  4. Tap Automatic Updates.

  5. Choose one of the following options:

    1. Automatically Install: When an update is available, iPhone downloads and installs the update overnight while charging and connected to Wi-Fi. You will be notified before an update is installed.

    2. Automatically Download: Downloads updates automatically when your iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi, charging and locked, so you can install them later. To see this option, first turn off Automatically Install.

Install software updates

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Tap General.

  3. Tap Software Update. The screen will display the installed version of iOS and whether an update is available.

  4. If an update is available, tap Download and Install, then follow the onscreen instructions.
