How to use Ready for Repair or Trade In

You can use Ready for Repair or Trade In on a device with version 27 or later of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS or visionOS to keep it secure and findable in the Find My app during eligible repairs or trade ins.

What happens when you request a repair or trade in for your device

When you request a repair or trade in, Apple or the Authorised Service Provider will provide guidance on whether you can use Ready for Repair or Trade In to initiate the repair for your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac or Apple Vision Pro. For eligible repairs or trade ins, using Ready for Repair or Trade In keeps Find My on throughout the repair or trade in process.

Here’s what the process looks like:

  1. You request an authorised repair or trade in for your iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch or Apple Vision Pro.

  2. You’re given steps to prepare your device for a service or trade in. If that device is updated to version 27 or later of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS or visionOS, you turn on Ready for Repair or Trade In as part of the process to prepare your iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch or Apple Vision Pro for an in-person service or prepare your Mac for an in-person or mail-in service. (For an Apple Watch or Apple Vision Pro, you can do this on the web or on another device.)

  3. You bring your iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch or Apple Vision Pro to a service centre or send in your Mac. In the Find My app on a device also updated to version 27 or later of iOS, iPadOS, macOS or watchOS, or on icloud.com/find, you can check if the repair or trade in is in progress.*

  4. A technician completes the repair or trade in. They mark that it’s complete and Ready for Repair or Trade In automatically turns off.

If you decide to cancel the repair or trade in, you can turn off Ready for Repair or Trade In before you send in your device.

* Apple Vision Pro location isn’t available in the Find My app.
