Delete or uninstall apps on Mac
When you delete or uninstall an app, the storage space it was using will become available for other items.
Deleting or uninstalling an app won’t remove any documents or other files you created with the app, although you may not be able to open such files without the app. Deleting or uninstalling an app also won’t cancel any subscription you purchased with the app.
How to delete or uninstall an app
If the app is currently open, exit the app before continuing.
Locate the app in the Finder.
Most apps are in the Applications folder, which you can open by clicking Applications in the sidebar of a Finder window. Or choose Applications from the Go menu in the menu bar.
To show the app in the Finder, you can also search for the app with Spotlight, then press and hold the Command (⌘) key while double-clicking the app in the Spotlight search results.
Find out whether the app includes an “Uninstall” or “Uninstaller” app, which is usually found in the same folder as the app. If your app includes an uninstaller, it’s the best way to delete the app, because it knows where on your Mac the app may have put various support files, such as login items, extensions, caches and other non-user data. Some apps offer an uninstall (or remove or reset) feature as a menu item or setting within the app.
If your app doesn’t include an uninstall app or feature, manually drag the app to the Bin, or select the app and press Command-Delete. If you’re asked for a username and password, enter the username and password for an administrator account on your Mac. This is usually the name and password you use to log in to your Mac.
To permanently delete the app and make its storage space available for other items, choose Finder > Empty Bin from menu bar in the Finder, or press Shift-Command-Delete.
If you can’t delete the app
You can’t use the Finder to delete apps that are required by your Mac. This includes many apps that are installed by macOS, such as Mail, Music, Books, Notes, Podcasts, Maps, News and Stocks.
If you can’t delete an app because your Mac says that it’s in use, make sure the app isn’t open. If necessary, restart your Mac or start up in Safe Mode, then try again.
