If your iPhone or iPad is running slow

Try these tips if your iPhone or iPad freezes or has performance issues.

Check your network conditions

Apps often need an internet connection, and slow performance can occur due to network congestion or when a device reconnects to cell towers while moving. Even with a strong signal, you may need to wait, try a different location or use Wi-Fi. Contact your network provider if mobile data issues persist across multiple locations.

Close an app that’s not responding

To force close an app on your iPhone or iPad:

  1. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen (or double-click the Home button on older iPhone and iPad devices).

  2. Find the app.

  3. Swipe up on its preview to close the app.

Force closing apps unnecessarily can actually slow down your device because it takes longer to reload all of the data when you reopen the app.

Check your device’s available storage

iOS and iPadOS manage storage automatically during tasks such as app installs and updates by removing items that can be downloaded again or that aren’t needed any more. To avoid slow-downs, maintain at least 1 GB of free space. To check your device’s storage, go to Settings > General > [Device] Storage.

iOS and iPadOS offer storage-saving recommendations in Settings > General > [Device] Storage. You can enable these recommendations or review apps to free up more space. If you can’t see any recommendations, or if you need to free up even more space, review the apps on your device. Your apps are listed on the same [Device] Storage screen along with the amount of space they use.

Tap an app, then choose from the options:

Turn off Low Power Mode

Low Power Mode is a feature that helps extend battery life by limiting device power consumption. When enabled, certain features are disabled or work slower, and the battery icon turns yellow. Low Power Mode can be turned on in Settings > Battery. Consider leaving Low Power Mode off if you need your iPhone or iPad to function without low-power restrictions.

Keep your device from getting too hot or cold

When your iOS or iPadOS device gets too hot or cold, it may run slower. To fix this, move it to a more moderate temperature.

Check your battery health

All rechargeable batteries are consumable components that become less effective as they chemically age. Over time, the rechargeable batteries in all iPhone and iPad models will diminish in their capacity and peak performance and will eventually need to be replaced. iOS can show battery health and recommend if an iPhone battery needs to be replaced. Go to Settings > Battery and tap Battery Health. Battery Health is only available on iPhone.
