How to find your lost iPhone or iPad

If you lost your iPhone or iPad, you can use Find My to try to locate it and mark it as lost to protect your personal information.

Ways to find your iPhone or iPad

You can find a lost iPhone or iPad on the web at iCloud.com/find or with the Find My app on another device.

If you can’t find your device straight away, mark it as lost to protect it.

Use Find Devices on iCloud.com/find

When you sign in to iCloud.com/find, you can use the Find Devices app to locate your devices. Once you’re in the app, review the list of your devices under All Devices and tap the one you want to find. On the device information card, you can play a sound to help locate it, mark it as lost or erase it.

Use the Find My app on another device

If you have another trusted Apple device that’s signed in with your Apple Account, you can use Find My on that device to lock and find your iPhone or iPad.

If you’re part of a Family Sharing group, your devices can appear in Find My on your family members’ devices.

Ways to mark your iPhone or iPad as lost

There are a few ways to mark your iPhone or iPad as lost. When you mark your device as lost, your device is put in Lost Mode, which means your device is locked with your passcode, and payment cards and passes that you use with Apple Pay are suspended. You can also display a phone number and message that allows others to get in touch with you if they find your device.

When you mark as device as lost:

Apple will never contact you to say that your iPhone or iPad has been found. Never share your device passcode or other account information (such as passwords or verification codes) with anyone else.

Stay vigilant to avoid social engineering schemes, including phishing messages, fake support calls and other scams.

Use Find Devices on iCloud.com/find

To sign in to iCloud.com/find, you don’t need a verification code – so you can mark your device as lost, even if it’s your trusted device that’s lost. If you’re asked for a verification code, select the Find Devices button instead.

Use the Find My app on another device or a Family Sharing group member’s device

  1. In the Find My app (or Find Devices on Apple Watch), go to the Devices tab.

  2. Scroll down and select your missing iPhone or iPad.

  3. Scroll down to Lost [Device], then turn on Lost Mode.

  4. Follow the on-screen steps if you want to display your contact information on your missing device.

  5. Tap Activate.

On a Family Sharing group member’s device, your iPhone or iPad will appear underneath their devices.

If Find My wasn’t turned on for your device before it was lost, it won’t appear at iCloud.com/find or in the Find My app and you can’t mark it as lost or remotely erase it.

If your iPhone or iPad is lost and you’re unable to find it, follow these additional steps to protect your accounts and personal information, and replace your device (if applicable).

Remotely erase your iPhone or iPad

You can erase your device remotely using the Find My app on another device or at iCloud.com/find. But make sure that you’ve tried everything else to find it, because erasing your device can’t be undone.

Don’t remove the device from Find My, even if you’ve remotely erased it. Removing the device from your Find My list will remove Activation Lock, which will make it easier for the thief to unlock and resell your device.

If you’ve filed a claim with AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss, don’t remove the device from Find My or your Apple Account, even if you erase it remotely.

If your device is offline, the remote erase process will begin the next time it’s online.

Review your Apple Account information

Make sure that your Apple Account is secure by reviewing your Apple Account information. If you find changes that you don’t recognise or didn’t make, update that information and change your Apple Account password.

If you have another trusted device

Use your other trusted device (such as an iPad or Mac) to review your account. Go to Settings, then tap [Your Name] or System Settings, tap [Your Name], then tap Sign-In & Security to review your security settings.

If you get a new Apple device

After you’ve signed in with your Apple Account, you can review your account information. There may be a waiting period before you can make changes to your security settings.
