Turn on closed captions and subtitles on your Mac

Most recent macOS versions include a number of apps and features that support closed captions and subtitles, including iTunes, DVD Player, QuickTime Player, and HTML5 video viewed in Safari.

If the video you're watching includes captions and subtitles, you can find them in the Audio & Subtitles menu:

  1. Move your pointer over the video.
  2. Click the speech bubble speech bubble icon.
  3. Choose the subtitles option that you want to use:

Set caption and subtitle preferences

If you want videos to use captions or subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing by default:

  1. Choose Apple menu () > System Preferences, then click Accessibility.
  2. Select Captions in the sidebar.
  3. Select "Prefer closed captions and SDH":

Customize captions and subtitles

You can customize the style of the subtitles or captions to better suit your needs:

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Accessibility.
  2. Select Captions in the sidebar.
  3. Select one of the predefined styles: Default, Large Text, or Classic.

To create your own style, click Add button. You can change the font, size, and color of the text, along with the color and opacity of the background. A preview of your new style appears at the top of the window.

After you make your selections, click OK to save them. This style is then used as the default style for captions and subtitles in each app.

Not all videos include caption or subtitle tracks. Check the documentation for the video you're using to see if it includes these features.

Some third-party websites and apps provide custom caption controls for videos. If you don't see caption controls when viewing video from a website, check the documentation, or contact the website owner or app developer for more information.
