iBooks Author: Adding video content with a closed caption track

iBooks Author allows you to create beautiful Mutli-Touch books for the iPad. To ensure that all members of the audience can enjoy your book, you may want to include video with closed captioning.

If you have the Scenarist file (a closed caption format file, usually with an .scc file extension) and the non-captioned movie file, you can use Compressor to insert the closed caption track into the movie file. Compressor will encode it into a QuickTime file using these steps:

  1. Launch Compressor.

  2. From the Batch window, select Add File. Choose your movie, and open it to add it to the project.

  3. Select the movie file from the Batch window. Then, click the Inspector button to open the Inspector window.

  4. Click the Additional Information tab in the Inspector window.

  5. Under the "Closed Caption file" text, click the "Choose…" button.

  6. Navigate to the .scc file on your hard drive, and click the Open button.

  7. From the Settings tab, locate an iOS compatible setting in the Apple/Apple Devices folder.

  8. Drag this setting to the movie file listed in the Batch window.

  9. Click the Submit button in the Batch window.

  10. In the sheet that appears, provide a name for the job.

  11. If you have an Apple Qmaster cluster, select your cluster or "This Computer."

  12. Set a Priority.

  13. Click Submit.

  14. The status of your Compressor job will be displayed in the History window.

When the job completes, you can click the magnifying glass icon in the History window to reveal the encoded file in Finder. You can use this file with iBooks Author or publish it with Course Manager to an iTunes U course.

You need to start with a Scenarist file (identifiable by the .scc file extension). You can create these files using third-party applications, such as MovieCaptioner, MacCaption and CapScribe Open. These third-party applications provide the means to import transcripts, edit them with timing information, encode closed captioning data in the necessary format, and insert the closed captioning data into a QuickTime file in preparation for adding it to your iBooks Author project.

There are also post-production facilities that can handle the entire closed captioning process for you as well.
