Use your Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote with Apple TV

Apple TV Remote (2nd generation and later)

This remote ships with Apple TV 4K (2nd generation and later). In countries and regions that support Siri, the remote is called Siri Remote. Elsewhere, it’s called Apple TV Remote.

Power button

The Power button is the small, circular button located on the top-right corner of the remote.

Press and hold the Power button to turn on your TV and wake your Apple TV. Press and hold the button again to turn off your TV and put your Apple TV to sleep.

Clickpad

The clickpad is a large, circular button located in the top-center of the remote.

To move around the screen, press up, down, left, or right on the clickpad ring. Or swipe up, down, left, or right on the clickpad. To scroll through lists, quickly swipe up or down on the clickpad multiple times.

To select an item, highlight it, then press the center of the clickpad.

During playback, press left or right on the clickpad ring to skip backward or forward. To continuously rewind or fast-forward, press and hold left or right on the clickpad ring. Press the left or right side repeatedly to cycle through speed options (2x, 3x, or 4x).

To scrub through the timeline, press the Play/Pause button or the center of the clickpad, then swipe left or right on the clickpad to move backward or forward in time. You can also circle your finger counterclockwise or clockwise around the clickpad ring.

Siri button

The Siri button is a long, narrow button located on the top-right edge of the remote.

If Siri is supported in your country or region, you can ask Siri to play certain movies, TV shows, genres, and more. Just hold down the Siri button, say what you want, then release the Siri button.

You can also use the Siri button for dictation. In a text entry field, press and hold the Siri button, say the text that you want to enter, then release the Siri button.

Dictation may not be available in all countries or regions.

Back button

The Back button is a circular button located on the left side of the remote directly below the clickpad.

While browsing content, press the Back button one time to return to the previous screen. Or press and hold the Back button to go to the Home Screen.

TV/Control Center button

The TV/Control Center button is a circular button located on the right side of the remote directly below the clickpad.

If your country or region supports the Apple TV app, press the TV/Control Center button one time to open the Apple TV app. If not, press it one time to go back to the Home Screen.

Press the button two times to open the App Switcher. Use the clickpad to swipe through your open apps, then press the center of the clickpad to open an app. Swipe up to close an app. Or press the TV/Control Center button to return to the Apple TV app.

Press and hold the TV/Control Center button to bring up Control Center. Press it again to hide Control Center.

Play/Pause button

The Play/pause button is a circular button. It's located on the left side of the remote between the two other circular buttons.

Press the Play/Pause button one time to play or pause content.

To scrub through the timeline, press the Play/Pause button, then swipe left or right on the clickpad to move backward or forward in time. You can also circle your finger counterclockwise or clockwise around the clickpad ring.

Press the Play/Pause button to resume your content.

Mute button

The Mute button is a circular button located closest to the bottom of the remote on the left side.

Press the Mute button one time to mute audio. Press it again to turn the audio back on.

Not all audio setups support this button. You might need to use the volume controls on the remote that came with your TV.

Volume up or down

The Volume button is an oblong button halfway down the right side of the remote. The top half of the button is Volume Up, and the bottom half is Volume Down.

Press volume up or volume down to raise or lower the volume of the Apple TV.

Apple TV Remote (1st generation)

This remote ships with Apple TV 4K (1st generation) and Apple TV HD. In countries and regions that support Siri, the remote is called Siri Remote. Elsewhere, it’s called Apple TV Remote.

Touch surface

The Touch surface is all of the smooth surface on the top third portion of the remote.

To move around the screen, tap or swipe up, down, left, or right. To scroll through lists, quickly swipe up or down multiple times.

To select an item, highlight it, then press to click the touch surface.

During playback, rest your finger on the touch surface, then press the left or right side of the touch surface to move backward or forward in time. To continuously rewind or fast-forward, press and hold the left or right side of the touch surface. Press the left or right side repeatedly to cycle through speed options (2x, 3x, or 4x).

To scrub through the timeline, press the Play/Pause button or the touch surface, then swipe left or right to to move backward or forward in time.

Menu button

The Menu button is a circular button located on the left side of the remote directly below the Touch surface.

If your Apple TV is asleep, press the Menu button one time to wake Apple TV. If you're browsing content, press the Menu button one time to return to the previous screen. Press and hold the Menu button to go to the Home Screen.

TV/ Control Center button

The TV/Control Center button is a circular button located on the right side of the remote directly below the Touch surface.

If your country or region supports the Apple TV app, press the TV/Control Center button one time to open the Apple TV app. If not, press it one time to go back to the Home Screen.

Press the button two times to open the App Switcher. Use the touch surface to swipe through your open apps, then press the touch surface to open an app. Swipe up to close an app. Or press the TV/Control Center button to return to the Apple TV app.

Press and hold the TV/Control Center button to bring up Control Center. Press it again to hide Control Center.
