Here's where you can pay for transit with an iPhone or Apple Watch that works with Apple Pay:

Pay for your ride

Here's how to pay for your ride with Apple Pay unless you're using Express Transit. Learn how to use Express Transit with Apple Pay in Japan or in Beijing or Shanghai, China.

With your iPhone 8 or earlier

  1. Make sure that your device is on before you enter the gate. It doesn't need to be connected to a network.
  2. As you approach a fare gate or board the bus, double-click the Home button with your device on the Lock screen.
  3. Rest your finger on Touch ID. You'll see Hold Near Reader on the screen.
  4. Within a minute, hold the top of your iPhone near the contactless reader at the transit gate.

After a moment, you'll see Done and a checkmark on the display.

With your iPhone X or later

  1. Make sure that your device is on before you enter the gate. It doesn't need to be connected to a network.
  2. As you approach a fare gate or board the bus, double-click the side button.
  3. Glance at iPhone X to authenticate with Face ID or enter your passcode.
  4. Hold the top of your iPhone X near the contactless reader at the transit gate.

After a moment, you'll see Done and a checkmark on the display.

On iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, Express Cards with power reserve is available for up to five hours when your iPhone needs to be charged. You can press the side button to check if Express Cards are available when your iPhone needs to be charged. Doing this often may significantly reduce the power reserve for Express Cards. If you choose to power off your iPhone, this feature will not be available.

With your Apple Watch

  1. Double-click the side button.
  2. Hold the display of your Apple Watch within an inch of the contactless reader. 
  3. Wait until you feel a gentle tap. Watch the demo to see how it works. 

* Not all transit cards are supported. Check with your card issuer for information about transit cards you can add to Apple Pay. Express Transit with Apple Pay is currently in beta in Beijing and Shanghai.
