Before You Begin

Warning

Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.

Remove the following parts before you begin:

Tools

  • Adjustable torque driver (0.3–1.2 Nm)

  • Nylon probe (black stick)

  • Torque driver (blue, 0.65 kgf cm)

  • Torx Plus 3IP 44 mm half-moon bit

  • Torx Plus 8IP 25 mm bit

Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.

Caution

  • This procedure requires System Configuration. After you’ve completed all removal and reassembly steps, learn how to initiate the System Configuration process.

  • If you’re installing a replacement display, you must also install a replacement lid angle sensor.

Removal

  1. Fully open the display and place the computer facedown on a clean surface with the display hanging down over the edge of the table.

  2. Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to remove the four 3IP screws (923-06854) from the two display connector cowlings. Remove the cowlings and save them for reassembly.

  3. Lift the ends of the display backlight power flex cable, FaceTime HD camera flex cable, and embedded DisplayPort (eDP) flex cable off the connectors.

  4. Lift the display cable clips off the internal frame of the top case. Gently fold them back over the edge of the top case to reveal the display cable bumpers underneath.

  5. Lift the display cable bumpers out of the top case and save them for reassembly.

  6. Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to remove the two 3IP screws (923-06854) from the lid angle sensor connector cowling. Remove the cowling and save it for reassembly.

  7. Use the black stick to lift the end of the lid angle sensor flex cable off the connector.

  8. Use the 0.3–1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver and 8IP bit to remove the six 8IP screws (923-11152) from the display hinges. Hold the display in place as you remove the screws.

  9. Lift the display until the hinges clear the edge of the top case. Ensure that the display flex cables (1) and lid angle sensor flex cable (2) don’t get caught on the logic board or top case.

    • Caution: Don’t put pressure on the logic board with the display hinges.

Reassembly

Important

If you’re installing a replacement display, ensure that you remove all protective liners and tape from the replacement display.

  1. Align the hinges of the display with the corners of the top case as you lower the display into position.

    • Caution

      • Don’t put pressure on the logic board with the display hinges.

      • Ensure that the hinges slide under the edge of the top case.

  2. Ensure that the display flex cables (1) and lid angle sensor flex cable (2) don’t get caught on the logic board as you position the display in the top case.

  3. Use the 0.3–1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver and 8IP bit to partially reinstall the six 8IP screws (923-11152) into the display hinges in the order shown.

  4. Close the display and stand the computer on its edge. Adjust the display until it’s flush with the top case.

  5. Place the computer facedown with the battery closest to you.

  6. Keep the 8IP bit in the adjustable torque driver. Set the torque value to 0.7 Nm.

  7. Use the adjustable torque driver and 8IP bit to fully reinstall the six 8IP screws (1–6) into the display hinges.

  8. Tuck only the folded section of the display flex cables (length of the flex cable closest to the display) into the gap between the display and internal frame.

  9. Position the display cable bumpers in the internal frame and over the bends in the display flex cables as shown.

  10. Align the display flex cable clips around the edge of the display cable bumpers (1). Then insert the display flex cables into the gap between the internal frame and logic board (2).

  11. Press the display flex cable clips down over the bumpers and onto the internal frame.

  12. Press the ends of the display backlight power flex cable (1), FaceTime HD camera flex cable (2), and eDP flex cable (3) to the connectors on the logic board.

  13. Position the two display connector cowlings over the ends of the display backlight power flex cable, FaceTime HD camera flex cable, and eDP flex cable connectors. Then use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to reinstall two 3IP screws (923-06854) into each of the cowlings.

  14. Press the end of the lid angle sensor flex cable to the connector.

  15. Position the lid angle sensor connector cowling over the end of the lid angle sensor flex cable. Then use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to reinstall the two 3IP screws (923-06854) into the lid angle sensor connector cowling.
