Turn roles on or off when sharing a Final Cut Pro X project

Choose the roles and subroles you want to export along with your project.

When you're ready to share your project, turn roles on or off depending on what you want included in your exported file. For example, you might want to export your project with only sound effects and music, leaving out the dialog. Or, turn off all roles except dialog before sending to a transcription service to create closed captions or subtitles.

Simply turn the roles on or off in the Roles pane of the timeline index. Then, choose File > Share, choose the destination, then set your share settings in the Share window. For all destinations, your file includes only the roles and subroles you turned on.

If you use the Master File or Apple Devices destination to share a multi-channel QuickTime movie or a multi-channel MXF file, you can also turn roles on or off, or share roles and subroles as separate files. In the Share window, click Roles. Click the "Roles as" pop-up menu, then choose an option.

Share a multi-channel QuickTime movie

When you share a multi-channel QuickTime movie, you export a single file that contains the video and multiple audio channels. For example, you might want to share your project as QuickTime movie with a 5.1 surround audio mix. In the Roles pane of the Share window, you can choose the audio roles and subroles you want to include, and then create separate audio tracks for those roles.

In the Share window, click Roles, then choose Multitrack QuickTime Movie from the "Roles as" pop-up menu. By default, any roles you've turned on in the Roles tab of the timeline index are automatically included in the list.

To add another audio role as a separate audio track:

  1. Click Add Audio Track. A new audio track appears in the list.
  2. In the new audio track, click Add Role, then choose the audio role or subrole you want on that track.
  3. When you're finished adding tracks, click Next, enter a name, choose a location for the exported file, then click Save.

You can also combine roles on a track. Click Add Role, then choose the role or subrole you want to add to the track from the pop-up menu.

Share as separate video and audio files

You can share your projects as separate video and audio files. In the Share window, click Roles, then choose Separate Files from the "Roles as" pop-up menu. The list shows how many files will be exported.

To add any role or subrole as a separate file:

  1. Click Add Video File or Add Audio File. A new file appears in the list.
  2. In the new file in the list, click Add Role, then choose the role or subrole from the pop-up menu that you want to include in that file.
  3. When you're finished adding files, click Next, enter a name, choose a location for the exported file, then click Save.

Share captions

If your project includes captions, you can manage how they're exported when you share your project. You can choose to embed captions in the video file, or share captions as separate files. In the Share window, click Roles.

If your project includes CEA-608 captions, you can embed them in the video file. Click the Embed CEA-608 pop-up menu for the video track, then choose the language version. You can choose one language.

To share captions as separate files, select the checkboxes for the caption formats you want to export as separate files. Click the Timing pop-up menu, then choose an option.

When you're ready to share, click Next, enter a name, choose a location for the exported file, then click Save.
