Get help with the App Store on your Mac

Use these steps if the App Store on your Mac stops responding, or you encounter a problem while trying to purchase or update apps.

Use the App Store on your Mac to purchase and download apps and games, update software, and more.

If you can't find the App Store

Look for the App Store icon in the Dock.

If you don't see the icon in the Dock, choose Apple () menu > App Store from the menu at the top of your computer screen.

If you still can't find the App Store, you might be logged into a computer user account with Parental Controls turned on. Log in to an Administrator account on the same computer to change the Parental Controls or access the App Store.


Get help with your Apple ID

If you're asked for a verification code when you try to sign in with your Apple ID, learn how to get a verification code on a trusted Apple device.

If you move to a new country or region, you might not have access to the same content. App Store, iTunes Store, and Apple Books availability and features vary by country or region. The content offered in each store is also subject to the developer or content provider. If you've permanently moved to a new country, change your Apple ID billing address and payment method.


Get help with billing and purchases

In the App Store on your Mac, click the My Account button or your photo in the lower-left corner of the window, then click  View Information. (You might be asked to sigin in with your Apple ID.) From the Account Information screen, you can update your payment information and view, change, or cancel your subscriptions.

You can also view your purchase history in iTunes to identify charges on your bank, credit, or debit card statement.

If you have an issue with an app you purchased, report a problem.

If you received an email that you suspect might be phishing, learn how to identify legitimate emails.


Get help purchasing and updating apps

If nothing happens after you click Buy, click the My Account button or your photo in the lower-left corner of the window.

  • If you see the app under Purchased and there's an Open button below the name of the app, check your Dock or Applications folder for the app. 
  • If you see the app under Purchased and there's a the Download icon below the name of the app, click the Download icon . The app downloads to and installs on your Mac. You won't be charged a second time.

If the app isn't listed under Purchased, press Command-R on your keyboard to refresh the page. If the app doesn't appear, the purchase wasn't completed, and you weren't charged for the app. Return to the app's page in the App Store and click the Buy button again.

If the app's download is interrupted

If you get disconnected from the Internet while you're downloading and installing an app, the download will automatically restart when you reconnect. The time it takes to download depends on the size of the app and your Internet connection speed.

If you see "Update unavailable with this Apple ID."

You might see this message if:

  • You try to use the App Store to update an app that you bought using a different Apple ID.
  • You try to use the App Store with a different Apple ID on the same computer.
  • You try to update a refunded or canceled purchase.

You must update your apps with the same Apple ID that you used to download them originally. If you want to sign in with a different Apple ID, choose Store > Sign Out from the menu at the top of your computer screen, then sign in again.


If you get a new Mac

If you purchase or get a new or additional Mac, sign into the App Store with your Apple ID to redownload your apps.
