MacBook Pro (16-inch, Nov 2023) Logic Board

Before You Begin

 Warning

Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.

Remove the following parts before you begin:

Tools

  • Phillips #00 screwdriver

    • Note: Only required if installing a replacement logic board.

  • 4 mm hex nut driver (923-07179)

  • Adjustable torque driver (10–34 Ncm) (923-02995)

  • ESD-safe tweezers

  • Kapton tape

  • Nylon probe (black stick)

  • Torque driver (blue, 0.65 kgf-cm) (923-0448)

  • Torx Plus 3IP 44 mm half-moon bit (923-08468)

  • Torx Plus 3IP 25 mm bit (923-07593)

  • Torx Plus 5IP 50 mm bit (923-08673)

  • Torx T6 security bit (923-00304)

Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.

 Caution

Removal

  1. Use the blue torque driver and Torx Plus 3IP half-moon bit to remove four 3IP screws from the left and right speaker connector cowlings.

    • Two 3IP screws (923-06865) from the upper screw holes (1)

    • Two 3IP screws (923-06864) from the lower screw holes (2)

  2. Use the blue torque driver and 3IP half-moon bit to remove the 17 3IP screws from the following 8 cowlings:

    • Two 3IP screws (923-06854) from the lid angle sensor connector cowling (1)

    • Two 3IP screws (923-06854) from the MagSafe 3 board connector cowling (2)

    • Three 3IP screws (923-06854) from the left USB-C boards connector cowling (3)

    • Two 3IP screws (923-06854) from the audio board connector cowling (4)

    • Two 3IP screws (923-06854) from the right USB-C board connector cowling (5)

    • Two 3IP screws (923-07034) from the Touch ID board connector cowling (6)

    • Four 3IP screws (923-10094) from the two display connector cowlings (7, 8)

  3. Remove the 10 cowlings and save them for reassembly.

    • Important:

      • The left and right speaker connector cowlings (5, 6) have a deeper bend where the screw hole is closest to the battery cover. Note the orientation of the cowling for reassembly.

      • The left speaker connector cowling (5) has a circular etching in the middle.

  4. Lift the ends of the following 12 flex cables off the connectors on the logic board:

    • Lid angle sensor flex cable (1)

    • MagSafe 3 board flex cable (2)

    • Left USB-C boards flex cables (3 and 4)

    • Audio board flex cable (5)

    • Left speaker flex cable (6)

    • Right speaker flex cable (7)

    • Right USB-C board flex cable (8)

    • Touch ID board flex cable (9)

    • Display backlight flex cable (10)

    • FaceTime HD camera flex cable (11)

    • Embedded DisplayPort (eDP) flex cable (12)

  5. Lift the display flex cable clips off the internal frame of the top case. Gently fold them back over the edge of the top case to reveal the display cable bumpers underneath.

  6. Lift the display cable bumpers out of the top case. Save the bumpers for reassembly.

  7. Gently peel back the polyester film tabs from the ends of the microphones flex cable (1), keyboard backlight flex cable (2), and keyboard flex cable (3).

  8. Use the black stick to flip up the three locking levers (1-3). Then slide the ends of the three flex cables from the connectors.

  9. Gently peel back the polyester film tab from the end of the left fan flex cable (1). Then use the black stick to flip up the locking lever on the connector (2). Repeat this step for the right fan flex cable.

  10. Spread the tips of the ESD-safe tweezers and insert one tip under the left fan flex cable. Gently slide the tweezer tip under the flex cable to loosen the adhesive between the flex cable and logic board. Repeat this step to loosen the adhesive on the right fan flex cable.

    •  Caution:

      • Keep the tweezers parallel with the logic board surface to prevent damage.

      • Don't touch any of the small components on the logic board or fan flex cables.

  11. Then slide the ends of the two fan flex cables from the connectors on the logic board.

  12. Use the adjustable torque driver and Torx Plus 5IP bit to remove four 5IP screws (923-10131) from the bottom of the logic board.

  13. Use the adjustable torque driver and Torx Plus 5IP bit to remove six 5IP screws (923-06861) from the logic board near the fans.

  14. Use the adjustable torque driver and T6 security bit to remove two T6 screws (923-10095) from the upper corners of the logic board.

  15. Use the 4 mm hex nut driver to remove two 4 mm hex nut screws (923-06860) from the lower corners of the logic board.

  16. Peel the thermal duct covers from the fans (1). Then gently fold back the thermal duct covers and flex cables. Use Kapton tape to hold them back as shown.

    •  Caution:

      • Don’t strain the flex cables. Loosely tape them back so you can easily lift the logic board.

      • Don’t tape back the trackpad and BMU flex cables (2).

  17. Gently tilt up the logic board as shown (1). Then slide the logic board out of the top case (2). Use the black stick to hold back the trackpad and BMU flex cables (3) as you remove the logic board.

    •  Caution: Don't remove the heat sink from the logic board.

Reassembly

 Caution: If you’re installing a replacement logic board, the stiffeners, hex nuts, and #00 Philips screws must be transferred to the existing logic board before returning to Apple Service to prevent damage during shipping. The stiffeners (923-09961), hex nuts (923-07059), and #00 Phillips screws (923-07058) can be ordered separately.

Important:

  • If you're reinstalling the existing logic board, skip to reassembly step 13.

  • If you're installing a replacement logic board, complete all reassembly steps.

  1. Follow the removal and reassembly steps to install a replacement Touch ID board.

  2. Use the #00 Phillips screwdriver to remove the two #00 Phillips screws (923-07058) (1) from the heat sink on the replacement logic board.

    • Note: The two #00 Phillips screws are secured by two removable hex nuts (923-07059) (2) on the bottom of the logic board.

  3. Use the #00 Phillips screwdriver to fully loosen the six captive #00 Phillips screws (2) from the top stiffeners on the replacement logic board. Lift the top stiffeners off the replacement logic board and set them aside.

    • Note: The four stiffeners are marked with the following:

      • TL (top left)

      • TR (top right)

      • BL (bottom left)

      • BR (bottom right)

  4. Lift the replacement logic board off the bottom stiffeners and set it aside.

  5. Position the existing logic board over the bottom stiffeners. Align the screw holes in the existing logic board with the screw holes in the bottom stiffeners.

  6. Position the top stiffeners on the existing logic board. Align the screw holes in the top stiffeners with the screw holes in the existing logic board.

    • Important: The captive screws in the top stiffeners install through the screw holes of the logic board and into the screw holes in the bottom stiffeners.

  7. Use the #00 Phillips screwdriver to fully reinstall the six captive #00 Phillips screws (2) into the stiffeners.

  8. Insert one #00 Phillips screw through the screw hole in the heat sink and logic board (1).

  9. Hold the hex nut in place and turn over the logic board. Partially install the hex nut (3) over the end of the #00 Phillips screw. Then hold the hex nut in place and turn over the logic board.

  10. Use the #00 Phillips screwdriver to fully reinstall the #00 Phillips screw.

  11. Repeat steps 8 through 10 to install the other Phillips #00 screw (1) and hex nut (2). Then continue to step 12.

  12. Place the existing logic board inside the reused ESD-safe packaging.

  13. Position the packaged logic board in the foam frame.

  14. Close and seal the box. Ship the box to Apple Service.

  15. Ensure that the thermal duct covers and flex cables are folded back and secured to the top case with Kapton tape as shown.

  16. Use the black stick to hold back the trackpad and BMU flex cables (1). Hold the logic board by the edges. Tilt down one edge of the logic board into the top case as shown (2). Then lower the other edge of the logic board into the top case (3).

    •  Caution: Ensure that no cables are caught under the logic board.

  17. Gently remove the Kapton tape from the thermal duct covers and flex cables. Position the thermal duct covers and press to adhere them to the heat sink (1).

  18. Use the adjustable torque driver and T6 security bit to partially reinstall the two T6 screws (923-10095) into the top corners of the logic board.

  19. Set the torque value of the adjustable torque driver to 16 Ncm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and T6 security bit to fully reinstall the two T6 screws.

  20. Thread the two 4 mm hex nut screws (923-06860) into the bottom corners of the logic board. Then use the 4 mm hex nut driver to reinstall the two 4 mm hex nut screws.

  21. Set the torque value of the adjustable torque driver to 11.5 Ncm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to reinstall the six 5IP screws (923-06861) into the logic board near the fans.

  22. Set the torque value of the adjustable torque driver to 28 Ncm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to reinstall the four 5IP screws (923-10131).

  23. Tuck the folded sections of the display flex cables (length of the flex cable closest to the display) into the gap between the display and internal frame.

  24. Position the display cable bumpers in the internal frame and over the folded sections of the display flex cables as shown.

  25. Align each display flex cable clip with the edge of the display cable bumper (1). Then insert each display flex cable into the gap between the internal frame and logic board (2).

  26. Press the display flex cable clips down over the bumpers and onto the internal frame.

  27. Slide the ends of the following five flex cables into the connectors:

    • Microphones (1)

    • Keyboard backlight (2)

    • Keyboard (3)

    • Left fan (4)

    • Right fan (5)

  28. Then use the flat end of the black stick to flip down the five locking levers. Press the polyester film tabs over the five connectors.

  29. Press and hold the left fan flex cable for 15 seconds to adhere it to the logic board. Then repeat this step to adhere the right fan flex cable.

  30. Press the ends of the following 12 flex cables to the connectors on the logic board:

    • Lid angle sensor flex cable (1)

    • MagSafe 3 board flex cable (2)

    • Left USB-C boards flex cables (3 and 4)

    • Audio board flex cable (5)

    • Left speaker flex cable (6)

    • Right speaker flex cable (7)

    • Right USB-C board flex cable (8)

    • Touch ID board flex cable (9)

    • Display backlight flex cable (10)

    • FaceTime HD camera flex cable (11)

    • eDP flex cable (12)

  31. Position the following 10 cowlings over the connectors on the logic board:

    • Lid angle sensor connector cowling (1)

    • MagSafe 3 board connector cowling (2)

    • Left USB-C boards connector cowling (3)

    • Audio board connector cowling (4)

    • Left speaker connector cowling (5)

    • Right speaker connector cowling (6)

    • Right USB-C board connector cowling (7)

    • Touch ID board connector cowling (8)

    • Display connector cowling (9)

    • Display connector cowling (10)

  32. Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to reinstall the following 17 3IP screws into the eight cowlings:

    • 11 3IP screws (923-06854) (1 through 5)

    • Two 3IP screws (923-07034) (6)

    • Four 3IP screws (923-10094) (7,8)

  33. Set the torque value of the adjustable torque driver to 11.5 Ncm.

  34. Use the adjustable torque driver and 3IP bit to reinstall two 3IP screws (923-06864) into the lower screw holes of the left and right speaker connector cowlings.

  35. Use the blue torque driver and 3IP half-moon bit to reinstall two 3IP screws (923-06865) into the upper screws holes on the left and right speaker connector cowlings.

Reinstall the following parts to complete reassembly:
