Using Apple Configurator 2 with iPhone, iPad and Apple TV
You can use Apple Configurator 2 (a free Mac app available from the App Store) to quickly and easily configure one or dozens of iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Apple TV devices connected to your Mac through USB, or — in the case of Apple TV — wirelessly, before giving them to users. Simply select a single device — or many at once — and perform an action. With Apple Configurator 2, you’re able to update software, install apps and configuration profiles, rename and change wallpaper on devices, export device information and documents, and much more. You can also use it to restore devices from a backup. Using Apple Configurator 2 is ideal in shared device deployments because it makes it easy to keep the devices up-to-date with the latest settings, policies and apps.
The Automated Enrolment feature of Apple Configurator 2 allows you to use Apple School Manager or Apple Business Manager to enrol devices in mobile device management (MDM) without anyone tapping on the device to set it up.
Manual device enrolment
You can choose to add iOS, iPadOS and tvOS devices to Apple School Manager or Apple Business Manager using Apple Configurator 2, regardless of where the devices were purchased. When you set up a device that has been manually enrolled, it behaves like any other enrolled device, with mandatory supervision and MDM enrolment. For devices that weren’t purchased directly, the user has a 30-day provisional period to remove the device from enrolment, supervision and MDM. The 30-day provisional period begins after the device is activated.
There are two ways to add devices to one of the web-based portals:
You enable “Activate and complete enrolment”: You have an existing device that already has a record in, and is managed by, your MDM. This can include managing all the Set-up Assistant steps so the user gets a device that’s ready to use.
You don’t enable “Activate and complete enrolment”: You have a new or existing device that requires unique user authentication to enrol in MDM. The device starts up to the Set-up Assistant, and the user completes the enrolment.
