Before downloading new software, it’s a good idea to back up your device to make sure you have a copy of your important information. Choose your backup method.

Check compatibility

You will only see updates that are compatible with your current software version. If you haven’t downloaded the most current release, you won’t see the option to download the latest release.

Download iPadOS 17

When you download the latest version of iPadOS, your data and settings will remain unchanged.

Update iPad automatically

To turn on automatic updates:

1. Go to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates.

2. Turn on Download iPadOS Updates and Install iPadOS Updates.

When an update is available, iPad will download and install the update overnight while charging and connected to Wi-Fi. You will be notified before an update is installed.

To turn off automatic updates, go to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates.

Update iPad manually

To check for and download software updates, go to Settings > General > Software Update.

The screen will display the currently installed version of iPadOS and whether an update is available.
