If your HP printer doesn't work and you see a warning that HP software '...will damage your computer'

If you can't print or scan using your HP printer, and your Mac displays a warning about HP software files, you may need to replace your printer drivers. 

If your HP printer won't print or scan, and you see a warning message like one of those listed below starting on or after 22 October 2020, you may need to replace your HP printer drivers to resume using your printer. 

You might see a warning message like: 

  • "[name of HP software component] will damage your computer"
  • "Report malware to Apple..." 
  • "One or more components of the HP printer software are corrupted or missing"
  • "'Filter' failed"
  • "Failed to open a connection to the device (-21345)"

If your printer is AirPrint-enabled, you can remove it in System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, and then connect to and add the printer using AirPrint. 

Otherwise, you may need to follow the steps in this HP support article to resolve the issue.
