How to avoid scams when using Apple Pay to send and receive money

Use these tips to avoid scams and learn what to do if you receive a suspicious payment request.

When you send or receive money with Apple Pay, it’s just like any other private transaction between two people. And just like with other types of payments, there are some precautions you can take to avoid scams.

  • Send and receive money only with people you know. Make sure that the person requesting money isn’t impersonating someone you know or trust, like a relative, an employer, a government entity, or a charity—even if the account that the request came from looks official. Speak to the person yourself and verify their name and payment information. If you’re not sure about their identity, don’t send the payment.
  • If you receive a payment request from someone you don’t know, you can tap Report Junk under the message. You can also filter messages from unknown senders or block them from contacting you again.
  • Use extreme caution if a company tries to request an Apple Pay payment in Messages. Apple will not ask for payment by iMessage or SMS message.
  • Review payment information closely before you confirm it. If you sent the wrong amount or sent money to the wrong person, try to cancel the payment or ask them to send the money back.
  • You can choose to receive payments manually, so you can see who is sending you money before you accept it. Go to Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay, then tap your Apple Pay Cash card to see more options and tap Manually Accept Payment.
  • You can confirm that a payment you received is genuine by reviewing the payment details in your recent transactions list.
  • Never share your Apple ID password with anyone. Learn more about security and your Apple ID.
