iPhone Duo Troubleshooting Hinge Issues

Guided steps to help resolve issues

Identify issues

Try the quick troubleshooting step below if you notice any of the following issues:

  • Device won’t open or close completely

  • Unexpected noise while opening or closing the device

  • Loose hinge

  • Bent or broken hinge

  • Enclosure damage that affects hinge operation

Try the quick troubleshooting step

  1. Refer to the user guide for device hinge handling and safety guidance.

Run manual tests

If the issue wasn’t resolved by trying the quick troubleshooting step, run these manual tests to help isolate the cause of the issue:

  1. Remove any third-party cases or screen protectors.

  2. Inspect the hinge. Note: There aren’t diagnostics or software remedies for hinge issues. You don’t need to restart, update, or restore the device for these issues.

    1. Open and close the device, and note any noise as you do so. Check whether the hinge feels loose, stiff, or misaligned.

    2. Verify that the hinge securely holds the device in all positions.

    3. Check for particles or dust along the hinge and for dents or scratches on the enclosure.

  3. Clean the displays with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. If needed, clean the entire iPhone.

    • Important: Unplug all cables and turn off the iPhone first. Don’t use products containing bleach or hydrogen peroxide. Avoid getting moisture in any openings and don’t submerge the iPhone in any cleaning agents. Don’t use compressed air.

Replace the part

If the issue wasn’t resolved or isolated by following the previous steps, replace the inner display assembly.

After the repair is completed, turn on the device and verify that the hinge operates as expected and the device is completely functional.

Note: This section requires ordering parts and tools. Replacing a part may not resolve the device’s issue. You can find other service options at support.apple.com/repair.
