Use and customize Transparency mode for AirPods
You can use various headphone accommodation features on your AirPods Pro, like Transparency mode, Own Voice Amplification, and Conversation Boost, to customize the sounds that come through when you’re listening to audio. You can also turn off Loud Sound Reduction for Transparency and Adaptive modes.
Customize Transparency mode
When you use AirPods Pro to listen to audio in Transparency mode, you can still hear the world around you. You can customize Transparency mode by adjusting amplification, balance, and tone.
Wear your AirPods, and make sure they’re connected to your device.
Do one of the following:
iPhone or iPad: Go to the Settings app
, then tap Accessibility. Tap Audio & Visual, tap Headphone Accommodations, and make sure Headphone Accommodations is turned on. Tap Transparency Mode, turn on Custom Transparency Mode, then drag the Amplification, Transparency Balance, and Tone sliders.
Mac: Go to the System Settings app
, then click Accessibility
in the sidebar. Click Audio and make sure Headphone Accommodations is turned on. Turn on Transparency Mode, then drag the Amplification, Balance, and Tone sliders.
Reduce the amount of ambient noise you hear in Transparency mode
When your AirPods Pro are connected to your device, you can reduce the amount of ambient noise you hear in Transparency mode.
Wear your AirPods, and make sure they’re connected to your device.
Do one of the following:
iPhone or iPad: Go to the Settings app
, then tap Accessibility. Tap Audio & Visual, tap Headphone Accommodations, and make sure Headphone Accommodations is turned on. Tap Transparency Mode, turn on Custom Transparency Mode, then drag the Ambient Noise Reduction slider.
Mac: Go to the System Settings app
, then click Accessibility
in the sidebar. Click Audio and make sure Headphone Accommodations is turned on. Turn on Transparency Mode, then drag the Ambient Noise Reduction slider.
Adjust Own Voice Amplification
When your AirPods Pro are connected to your device, you can use Own Voice Amplification to adjust the amplification of your own speech.
Wear your AirPods, and make sure they’re connected to your device.
Do one of the following:
iPhone or iPad: Go to the Settings app
, then tap Accessibility. Tap Audio & Visual, tap Headphone Accommodations, and make sure Headphone Accommodations is turned on. Tap Transparency Mode, turn on Custom Transparency Mode, then drag the Own Voice Amplification slider.
Mac: Go to the System Settings app
, then click Accessibility
in the sidebar. Click Audio and make sure Headphone Accommodations is turned on. Turn on Transparency Mode, then drag the Own Voice Amplification slider.
Use Conversation Boost
When your AirPods Pro are connected to your device, you can use Conversation Boost to focus on the person talking in front of you. This makes it easier to hear in a face-to-face conversation.
Wear your AirPods, and make sure they’re connected to your device.
Do one of the following:
iPhone or iPad: Go to the Settings app
, then tap Accessibility. Tap Audio & Visual, tap Headphone Accommodations, and make sure Headphone Accommodations is turned on. Tap Transparency Mode, turn on Custom Transparency Mode, then turn on Conversation Boost.
Mac: Go to the System Settings app
, then click Accessibility
in the sidebar. Click Audio and make sure Headphone Accommodations is turned on. Turn on Transparency Mode, then turn on Conversation Boost.
Turn off Loud Sound Reduction in Transparency and Adaptive modes
You can choose to turn off Loud Sound Reduction on your AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3. Loud Sound Reduction helps protect your hearing by reducing exposure to loud environmental noise when in Transparency and Adaptive modes. Wear your AirPods, and make sure they’re connected to your device.
Do one of the following:
iPhone or iPad: Go to the Settings app
, then tap Accessibility. Tap AirPods, select your AirPods, then tap Turn Off Loud Sound Reduction.
Mac: Go to the System Settings app
, then click Accessibility
in the sidebar. Click Audio, select your AirPods, then click Turn Off next to Loud Sound Reduction.
If you have AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, AirPods Pro 2, or AirPods Pro 3, you can also use Conversation Awareness to automatically lower the volume of your media during a conversation and enhance voices in front of you. See Use Conversation Awareness or Personalized Volume.
