iPhone 18 Pro Max Taptic Engine (eSIM)

Before You Begin

Warning

Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.

Tools

  • Adjustable torque driver (10–34 Ncm)

  • Crosshead 44 mm half-moon bit

  • Crosshead 50 mm bit

  • ESD-safe tweezers

  • Nylon probe (black stick)

  • Torque driver (teal, 0.75 kgf cm)

Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.

Removal

Note: If you’ve already completed the removal steps, skip to reassembly.

Important

Complete display removal steps 1 through 5. Then continue to step 1.

  1. Use a torque driver and the crosshead bit to remove 11 crosshead screws.

    • Remove two crosshead screws, one from the battery connector cowling and one from the display connector cowling.

    • Remove seven crosshead screws from the bottom speaker.

      • Note: The screw closest to the USB-C connector is on the sidewall of the enclosure.

    • Remove two crosshead screws from the Taptic Engine.

    • Remove the battery connector cowling and the display connector cowling. Save the cowlings for reassembly.

    • Remove the USB-C flex cable cowling and save it for reassembly.

    • Lift the end of the battery flex cable off the connector.

      • Caution: You must disconnect the battery flex cable first to ensure that the iPhone remains turned off.

    • Lift the ends of the display flex cable and ambient light sensor flex cable off the connectors.

    • Hold the display by the edges. Pull the tabs on the suction cups to release them. Then set the display facedown on a clean, flat surface.

  2. Gently lift the bottom speaker out of the enclosure.

    • Caution: Don’t damage the grounding springs on the bottom speaker.

  3. Gently tilt up the Taptic Engine to access the flex cable underneath.

    • Lift the end of the Taptic Engine flex cable off the connector. Then lift the Taptic Engine out of the enclosure.

Reassembly

  1. Hold the Taptic Engine over the enclosure and press the end of the Taptic Engine flex cable to the connector.

  2. Lower the Taptic Engine into the enclosure.

  3. Set the torque value on the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 13 Ncm. Use the adjustable torque driver and crosshead bit to install one new crosshead screw (923-15929) (J2) into the Taptic Engine.

  4. Use the teal torque driver and crosshead bit to install one new crosshead screw (923-15936) (J3) into the Taptic Engine.

Reinstall the following parts to complete reassembly:
