MacBook Pro (14-inch, M5 Pro or M5 Max) Battery

Before You Begin

Warning

  • Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.

  • The battery must be drained to 30 percent using the Battery Drain Tool before attempting this procedure. Refer to MacBook Pro Battery Discharge Procedure.

  • Don’t connect the computer to an external power source during repair.

  • A battery should be replaced only by individual technicians with the knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices. Improper battery replacement, improper handling of parts, or failure to follow the provided instructions could result in fire, injury, data loss, or damage to the device, parts, or other property.

  • If the battery is dented, expanded, punctured or otherwise physically damaged, stop the repair. Don’t remove the battery from the device. Replace the top case with a new top case with battery and keyboard.

  • Don’t reuse or reinstall a loose battery or a battery that has been removed. Replace it with a new battery.

  • Remove any protective case from the computer.

  • When removing broken battery strips, insert the black stick only in the locations shown (1–8). Do not insert the black stick or other tools in the areas marked in red to avoid puncturing the soft ends of the battery cell and to prevent damage to other parts.

Caution

  • The battery contains six individual battery cells connected by a metal frame. Don’t bend or flex the metal frame.

  • When removing battery adhesive strips, don’t press parts in the top case for leverage. Use only the aluminum enclosure if you need to brace yourself while pulling the adhesive strips.

Remove the following part before you begin:

Tools

  • Adhesive activation roller

  • Adjustable torque driver (10–34 Ncm)

  • Battery alignment pins

  • Battery press plate

  • ESD-safe tweezers (round-tipped)

  • Ethanol wipes or isopropyl alcohol (IPA) wipes

  • Nylon probe (black stick)

  • Torx Plus 5IP 50 mm bit

Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.

Note: A replacement battery includes battery adhesive. Battery adhesive isn’t a separate orderable part.

Removal

Note: If you’ve already completed the removal steps, skip to reassembly.

Important

During the procedure, remove the adhesive strips one at a time from battery cells 1, 2, 3, and 4. Then remove the adhesive strips from battery cells 5 and 6. Reference this image while completing the battery removal process.

Warning

If a battery adhesive tab or strip breaks during this procedure, follow the instructions in MacBook Pro Broken Battery Adhesive Removal.

  1. Position the computer with the battery closest to you.

  2. Use the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to remove the 5IP screw (923-13420) from the battery assembly.

  3. Remove the battery cover from the battery. Then position the computer so battery cells 1 and 2 are closest to you and the battery adhesive tabs are facing you.

  4. Use ESD-safe tweezers to grasp the middle of the battery adhesive tab adhered to the side of battery cell 1. Don’t pull the adhesive tab adhered to cell 2 yet.

    • Warning: Don’t touch the side of the battery cell with the tweezers.

  5. Use ESD-safe tweezers to gently pull the battery adhesive tab away from the side of the battery cell. Pull on the tab until the adhesive tab is fully separated from the side of the battery cell.

    • Important: The middle of an adhesive tab doesn’t have adhesive on it. The ends of a tab have adhesive that adheres the tab to the side of the battery cell.

  6. Use ESD-safe tweezers to grasp the entire battery adhesive tab in the channel next to the battery cell.

    • Caution: Grasping only part of the tab may cause it to break.

  7. Keep the ESD-safe tweezers in the channel next to the battery cell. Then gently twist the battery adhesive tab around the end of the tweezers until you see the white adhesive on the tweezers.

    • Caution: Twist the tweezers so the top of the tweezers rolls toward the battery.

  8. Gently pull the battery adhesive strip away from the battery cell at an angle toward the side of the computer. Pull the adhesive strip up 2 inches at a time. Holding the ESD-safe tweezers parallel to the computer, twist the strip onto the end of the tweezers so the adhesive lies flat as shown.

    • Caution

      • Don’t rub the strips against the top case frame. Don’t touch the logic board with the tweezers. Don’t press the battery or other parts.

      • Don’t rub the strip on battery cells 2 and 4 against the speaker foam. If the foam is damaged by the adhesive, replace both speakers.

    • Important: You may need to brace against the aluminum enclosure while you pull the adhesive strip.

  9. Repeat the pull-and-twist process gently until the battery adhesive strip is fully removed from under the battery cell.

  10. Repeat steps 4 through 9 on the second battery tab on cell 1. Then continue to step 11.

  11. Repeat steps 4 through 9 to remove the battery adhesive strips from battery cells 2, 3, and 4. Then continue to step 12.

    • Important: Rotate the computer so battery cells 3 and 4 are closest to you when removing the battery adhesive strips from these two cells.

  12. Repeat steps 4 through 9 to remove the battery adhesive strips from battery cells 5 and 6. Then continue to step 13.

    • Important: Rotate the computer so the display hinges are closest to you while removing the adhesive strips from cells 5 and 6.

    • Caution: Never insert any tools beneath battery cells 5 and 6 by the red-marked locations shown below. This will prevent damage to electronics supporting the trackpad.

  13. After all battery adhesive strips have been removed, position the computer so the battery assembly is closest to you. Tilt up the end of the assembly until you’re able to reach under it. Then slide the assembly out from under the metal battery management unit (BMU) tab (1) and remove it from the top case.

    • Caution

      • Support the battery assembly as you remove it to avoid bending the frame.

      • Ensure that the battery assembly doesn’t get caught on the metal BMU tab (1). Keep the angle of the battery low to the top case as you slide out the battery.

  14. Complete the removal steps in Battery Management Unit Flex Cable. Set the flex cable aside. You’ll reinstall it on the replacement battery during reassembly. Then continue to step 15.

  15. Use ethanol wipes or IPA wipes to remove any residual adhesive from the top case.

    • Caution: Don’t touch the electronic parts with the ethanol or IPA wipe. Don’t touch the speaker foam with the ethanol or IPA wipe to avoid damaging the foam.

Reassembly

  1. Position the computer with the trackpad flex cable closest to you. Install the battery alignment pins in the front left and right corners of the top case. Hand tighten the alignment pins.

  2. Ensure that the trackpad flex cable is moved out of the way.

  3. Open the replacement battery shipping box and remove the cardboard insert. Then remove the plastic enclosure.

    • Important: Keep the plastic enclosure in the same orientation as it is in the box.

  4. Turn over the battery so the blue-and-pink adhesive release liner is facing up and the battery alignment pin holes are positioned closest to the computer. Then place the enclosure and battery on the table between you and the computer.

  5. Grasp the two corners of the enclosure as shown. Then carefully pull them apart to open the enclosure.

    • Caution: Gently pull apart the enclosure to avoid damaging the battery.

  6. Peel the blue-and-pink adhesive release liner off the battery.

  7. Lift the battery from the plastic enclosure by holding the clear liner on each side as shown. Then turn the battery over so the liner is on top and the battery alignment pin holes are positioned closest to you.

    • Caution

      • While lifting, gently pull each side of the liner outward to keep the battery from sagging or bending, to protect the connections between battery cells, and to avoid damaging the battery.

      • Don’t touch the battery adhesive to the ESD-safe mat, computer parts, or tools before installing the battery.

  8. Tilt down the edge of the battery facing away from you and slide it under the battery management unit tab. Position the alignment holes on the clear liner over the battery alignment pins on the computer. Then lower the clear liner onto the alignment pins and the battery into the top case.

  9. Lightly press down on the foam above each battery cell to begin to adhere the battery adhesive onto the top case.

    • Caution: Don’t press on the edges of the battery cells.

  10. Fully open the display and place the computer facedown on a clean surface with the display hanging down over the edge of the table.

  11. Starting with the left end of the clear liner, gently peel the liner off the battery.

    • Caution: You may need to hold down the battery as you peel off the liner.

    • Important: Leave the blue liners on the battery.

  12. Align the battery press plate over the battery alignment pins as shown. Then lower the press plate onto the battery.

  13. Hold the adhesive activation roller with both hands and position it over battery cell 1. Then align the roller with the bottom edge of the cell as shown.

  14. Press down on the adhesive activation roller so the orange stripe on the roller pin aligns with the middle of the white band as shown.

    • Important: When using the adhesive activation roller, the orange stripe must be aligned within the white band.

  15. Starting at the left edge of the battery cell as shown, roll the adhesive activation roller across to the right edge of the cell. Then roll back to the left edge of the cell. This is one cycle. Complete 5 cycles for a total of 10 passes.

  16. Repeat steps 13 through 15 for battery cells 2, 3, and 4. Then continue to step 17.

  17. Hold the adhesive activation roller with both hands and position it over battery cell 5. Then align the roller with the left edge of cell 5 as shown.

  18. Press down on the adhesive activation roller so the orange stripe on the roller pin aligns with the middle of the white band.

  19. Starting at the top edge of the battery cell, roll the adhesive activation roller to the bottom edge of the cell. Then roll back to the top edge of the cell. This is one cycle. Complete 5 cycles for a total of 10 passes.

  20. Align the adhesive activation roller with the right edge of battery cell 5 as shown.

  21. Press down on the adhesive activation roller so the orange stripe on the roller pin aligns with the middle of the white band.

  22. Starting at the top edge of the battery cell, roll the adhesive activation roller to the bottom edge of the cell. Then roll back to the top edge of the cell. This is one cycle. Complete 5 cycles for a total of 10 passes.

  23. Repeat steps 17 through 22 for battery cell 6. Then continue to step 24.

  24. Lift the battery press plate off the battery and set it aside.

  25. Pick up the computer and close the display. Position the computer display side down on the table with the hinges facing away from you.

  26. Peel the six blue liners off the battery cells.

  27. Place the battery cover on the battery.

  28. Complete the reassembly steps in Battery Management Unit Flex Cable to reinstall the flex cable on the replacement battery. Then continue to step 29.

  29. Unscrew the battery alignment pins and remove them from the top case. The alignment pins can be reused.

  30. Set the torque value on the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 16 Ncm.

  31. Use the adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to reinstall the 5IP screw (923-13420) into the battery assembly.
