If you see Error 14 when you update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If you see Error 14 on your computer, learn what to do.

If your device ran iOS 13 with low storage, updating might cause one of these issues:

  • Your device goes into recovery mode and shows this message: "The [device name] could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (14)."

  • Your device stays at the Apple logo screen.

Try to update your device again

If your device remains at the Apple logo screen, restart your device.

If your device is still in recovery mode, update to iOS or iPadOS 14.6 or later:

  1. If your Mac has macOS Catalina or later, update your Mac.

  2. Otherwise, if you have a PC or an older Mac, update iTunes.

  3. Connect your device to your computer with a USB cable.

  4. Find your device on your computer.

  5. When asked, click Update to reinstall the software and keep your data.

Note: If you tried an earlier iOS or iPadOS version, update to 14.6 or later instead.
