Add, delete, and rearrange pages in Pages on iPhone
In Pages, you can create both word-processing and page layout documents, but you add and manage pages differently for each. In word-processing documents, pages are added automatically as your typing reaches the end of a page, but you can also add page breaks to create new pages. In page layout documents, you add pages manually as you need them.
You can also duplicate, delete, and rearrange section (in a word-processing document) and pages (in a page layout document), and combine documents or move content between documents of the same type.
Note: Before you start any of the tasks below, determine which type of document you have (the template you started with is designed for one or the other). To check, tap in the text, tap the text again, then tap Insert (you may need to tap first). If Page Break is among the options, it’s a word-processing document. If you don’t see Page Break, it’s a page layout document.
Add a page in a word-processing document
By adding two page breaks in succession, you can create a blank page.
Tap in the text to place the insertion point where you want to add the new page, then tap again.
Tap , tap Insert, then tap Page Break.
The insertion point moves to the top of the next page.
Add a second page break using the same steps.
The insertion point moves to the top of the next page, leaving a blank page between the two page breaks.
Add a page in a page layout document
Tap the page number button at the bottom of the screen to show Page Thumbnails view.
Touch and hold the thumbnail of the page you want the new page to follow, lift your finger, then tap in the top-right corner.
If there’s more than one master page for the template, choose the one you want; otherwise, a blank page is automatically added.
To close Page Thumbnails view, swipe down.
Duplicate pages
In a word-processing document you can duplicate a section, then delete any pages you don’t want to keep. In a page layout document, you can duplicate individual pages.
Tap the page number button at the bottom of the screen to show Page Thumbnails view.
In Page Thumbnails view, touch and hold the page you want to copy, lift your finger, then tap Duplicate (you may need to tap to see it).
The duplicate section or page is added after the original.
Do any of the following:
Remove unwanted pages in a section: Close Page Thumbnails view, then select and delete all the text and objects on the pages you want to remove. As a page is cleared, it’s removed. To remove a blank page, tap at the beginning of the next page (to place the insertion point before the first text or graphic), then tap on the keyboard. Sometimes a blank page has formatting elements you can’t see, like paragraph breaks. If you delete these elements, the page is deleted.
Move a section or page: In Page Thumbnails view, touch and hold the section or page you want to move, lift your finger, then tap Rearrange (you may need to tap to see it). Drag the duplicated to where you want it in the document, then tap Done.
To close Page Thumbnails view, swipe down.
Delete a page
In a word-processing document: Select all the text and objects on the page, then tap Delete. If the page you want to delete is blank, tap at the beginning of the next page (to place the insertion point before the first text or graphic), then tap on the keyboard. Sometimes a blank page has formatting elements you can’t see, like paragraph breaks. If you delete these elements, the page is deleted.
In a page layout document: Tap the page number button at the bottom of the screen to show Page Thumbnails view. Touch and hold the thumbnail of the page you want to remove, lift your finger, then tap Delete. (To select multiple pages, touch and hold one page as you tap other pages with a second finger, then lift your fingers.) To close Page Thumbnails view, swipe down.
If you accidentally delete a page and want it back, tap Undo or at the top of the screen.
Rearrange pages in a word-processing document
Because text flows from one page to another in word-processing documents, you can’t rearrange the pages in a section. You can, however, cut content from one page and paste it to another.
Here is an example of one way to cut text and objects and paste them to a different location in the same document:
Tap where you want your content to appear, then tap again.
Tap , tap Insert, then tap Page Break; repeat the steps a second time.
Select text and objects you want to move, then tap Cut.
The content is removed from your document, and a copy of it is saved to your device’s Clipboard. If you make a mistake, tap at the top of the screen to undo the action.
Tap in the blank page, tap again, then tap Paste.
If you didn’t move everything at once, keep cutting and pasting until all the content is where you want it.
To remove the first page break, place the insertion point before the text you moved, then tap on your keyboard.
If this causes your text to run into the preceding text, tap Return on your keyboard to move it down to the next line.
To remove the second page break, place the insertion point immediately before the text that follows the content you moved, then tap Delete on your keyboard.
Rearrange pages in a page layout document
Tap the page number button at the bottom of the screen to show Page Thumbnails view.
Touch and hold any page thumbnail, lift your finger, tap , then tap Rearrange.
Touch and hold the thumbnail of the page you want to move, then drag it to where you want it.
Tap Done, then swipe down to close Page Thumbnails view.
Tip: To rearrange more than one page, touch and hold one page as you tap other pages with a second finger, then lift your fingers and tap Cut. Tap the page thumbnail you want the content to follow, then tap Paste.
Copy and paste pages between documents
A quick way to reuse content is to copy a section from one word-processing document to another, or copy a page from one page layout document to another (you can also copy and paste within the same document). You can’t copy sections or pages between word-processing and page layout documents.
In the document you want to copy from, tap the page number button at the bottom of the screen to show page thumbnails.
If you don’t see a page number button, tap at the top of the screen, turn on Navigator, then tap Done.
Do one of the following:
Copy a section in a word-processing document: Tap any page thumbnail in the section, then tap it again (all the pages in the section show a highlight color).
Copy one page in a page layout document: Tap the page thumbnail, then tap it again.
Copy multiple pages in a page layout document: Touch and hold one page thumbnail as you tap other page thumbnails with a second finger, then lift your fingers.
Tap Copy.
Open the document you want to paste to, then show Page Thumbnails view.
Tap the page thumbnail you want the pasted content to follow, then tap Paste.
Note: To paste the section or pages at the start of a document, paste after the first page or section, then rearrange them.
When you copy pages from a document that uses a different starting template, or pages that use master pages you created yourself, the pages are copied along with the master pages they’re based on.
