What is an Apple ID?

An Apple ID gives you access to the iCloud, iTunes Store, iBooks Store, App Store, FaceTime, and other Apple services. It consists of an email address (for example, emilyparker@icloud.com) and a password. For more information about Apple ID, or to create one, go to the Apple ID acccount website.

You can have more than one Apple ID. However, to avoid confusion, Apple recommends you use the same Apple ID for iCloud, iTunes Store, iBooks Store, App Store, and other Apple services. For more information, see the Apple Support article Sign in with your Apple ID.

Create an Apple ID

Here are a few ways to create an Apple ID:

  • Using a new @icloud email address: In iCloud preferences, click “Create an Apple ID.” To open iCloud preferences, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click iCloud.

Note: In some locations, you can use a phone number instead of an email address as your Apple ID.

If you’re already signed in using an Apple ID, you must sign out before you can create a new Apple ID this way.

  • Using an existing email address: Go to the Apple ID account website, then click “Create your Apple ID.”

Note: In some locations, you can use a phone number instead of an email address as your Apple ID.

  • For a child: Add the child to your Family Sharing group. For instructions, see Manage the family you organized.
