FHIR API endpoint

A FHIR API endpoint, also known as an EHR gateway, is a communication mechanism for securely transmitting electronic health records over the internet. Every FHIR API endpoint has its own unique base URL for data transmission. Through a FHIR API endpoint, patients with the appropriate credentials can download their health records to registered apps like the Health app on iPhone and iPad.

A healthcare organization may have multiple FHIR API endpoints, especially if the organization is large. For example, one endpoint may serve an organization’s clinical department while another serves its urgent care department. An organization may also have multiple FHIR API endpoints if it acquires organizations with their own previously implemented endpoints.

A FHIR API endpoint is typically implemented and maintained by the EHR vendor or the clinical IT department for a healthcare organization.
