Add page numbers and text to headers and footers in Pages on Mac, iPhone, or iPad

Add page numbers and text to headers and footers, then set where you want them to appear in your document.

Add page numbers and text to headers and footers on Mac

  1. Click Document in the toolbar. In a word-processing document, you also have to click the Document tab.

  2. To turn on headers or footers, select the Header or Footer checkboxes.

  3. Move the pointer over the top or bottom of the page until you see the three header or footer fields, then click one.

    • If you're working in a word-processing document and you don't see the fields, click the Section tab at the top of the Document sidebar and make sure “Hide on first page of section” is not selected.

  4. To add page numbers, click Insert Page Number and choose a numbering style.

    • If you don't see the pop-up menu, click Insert in the toolbar, then choose Page Number.

  5. To add text, click in one of the header or footer fields and start typing.

  6. To change how the text or page numbers look, select the page number in the header or footer, click the Format button on the toolbar, then format your text.

  7. To change the distance of the headers or footers from the top or bottom edge of the page, click the arrows or enter values in the boxes below the Header or Footer checkboxes in the Document tab of the sidebar.

  8. To delete a header or footer, deselect the Header or Footer checkbox in the Document tab in the sidebar. This removes the content from all headers or footers in your document.

When you add page numbers, they increment automatically as you add pages. For word-processing documents with more than one section, you can change the starting numbers for each section. To get started with headers and footers in your document, turn on headers or footers. Then you can add page numbers, text, and images. You can also set where you want the headers and footers to appear in your Pages document.

Turn on headers or footers

To get started with headers and footers in your document, turn on headers or footers.

  1. Open your document in Pages.

  2. On iPhone, tap the More buttonNo alt supplied for Image. On iPad, tap the document name or tap the More button depending on what you see in the toolbar.

  3. Tap Document Options, then tap Document Setup.

  4. Turn on Headers or Footers.

  5. To delete a header or footer, turn off Headers or Footers. This removes the content from the headers or footers in your document.

Add page numbers to your document

  1. Open your document in Pages.

  8. Tap Page Numbers, then tap a page numbering option.

Add text and images to headers and footers

  1. Open your document in Pages.

  4. Tap More Options at the bottom of the controls.

  5. Tap in any of the three fields for the header or footer (you can use any combination of the fields).

  6. To add or edit text in the headers or footers, type the header or footer text, or select text that you want to edit.

  7. To change how the text looks, select the text, tap the Format buttonNo alt supplied for Image, then format your text.

Set the location of headers and footers

  1. Open your document in Pages.

  2. On iPhone, tap the More buttonNo alt supplied for Image. On iPad, tap the document name or tap the More button depending on what you see in the toolbar.

  3. Tap Document Options, then tap Document Setup.

  4. Tap More Options.

  5. To set the distance from the top and bottom edge of the page, drag the arrows above the header and below the footer.

The width of headers and footers depends on the left and right page margins. When you adjust page margins, you also adjust the width of the headers and footers.
